Box Score NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The fourth-seeded Marymount (Va.) University men's basketball team traveled down to top-seeded and No. 3 Christopher Newport University on Thursday night for the Capital Athletic Conference semifinals, falling behind late in the first half to drop a 78-53 decision to bring its season to a close.
Junior Dimitri Rucker, who is coming fresh off his first collegiate CAC Player of the Week honor, opened up the scoring on the first possession of the game for the Saints, knocking in a jumper for the 2-0 lead.
The Captains answered, but on the next offensive possession for the Saints, senior Michael Anderson followed in suit with a jumper of his own to put MU back out ahead.
A couple of turnovers and missed shots by the Saints slowly put them in an 11-5 hole, but a connection between freshmen Ryan Albert and LaDarius McCord cut the deficit to four. The Saints would continue to hang close with CNU including four-straight points off a McCord layup and two free throws by Anderson, but an eight-point stretch by the Captains pushed a lead that MU couldn't make up through the rest of the contest.
Anderson led the offense with a team-high 17 points, including 10-for-12 from the line, while freshman Xavier Adams came off the bench for seven points and a team-high six rebounds.
The Saints conclude the 2016-17 campaign with a 12-13 overall record, 9-9 in the CAC, and a trip to the league semifinals after defeating St. Mary's College of Maryland in the first round for its first postseason victory since 2009.
