Box Score ARLINGTON, Va. – The Marymount (Va.) University men's basketball team, fresh off its overtime win on Wednesday against Penn State University-Harrisburg, faced off against No. 17 Salisbury University on Saturday. A three pointer with 0.4 seconds, however, pushed the Sea Gulls past the Saints, 57-56, to take the decision.
The Saints came out with an early lead, coming from the efforts of juniors Alex Danko and Dimitri Rucker, and a big three-pointer coming off the hands of senior Michael Anderson. Marymount did not allow a single three-pointer from the Sea Gulls to drop in the first, shooting 0-for-10 from beyond the arc. Despite Salisbury's ability to gather some momentum, the Saints were able to reestablish a one-point lead going into halftime, 27-26, led by Rucker's six points.
Salisbury started the second half with a quick lay-in by Wyatt Smith, who was then fouled shortly after and went two-for-two from the line giving Salisbury back the lead. However, the Saints responded with a layup by freshman LaDarius McCord, followed by a huge tip-in by Brandon Rogers that forced a Salisbury timeout due to the Saints' momentum swing and the 31-30 advantage.
The second half saw numerous lead changes and impressive plays that included a big three pointer from Salisbury's Terray Quickley to beat the shot-clock, and freshman Ibrahim Kamara's three pointer to put the Saints within three points with a little over five minutes to go in the game.
Marymount's tenacious efforts were rewarded as the game went on, where Danko and Kamara would both go two-for-two from the line to put the Saints up by two with just seconds left in the matchup.
With less than 30 seconds remaining, Salisbury still had one more offensive possession. With great defensive effort, the Saints held the Sea Gulls from getting a shot off as the clock ticked down. However, the ball made its way up to the top of the key into the hands of Justin Witmer, who took a hesitation dribble into the step back for the long ball that dropped in with 0.4 seconds remaining to give Salisbury the one-point lead.
Trailing by one, MU drew up a play that had Rogers heaving a three-quarter court shot that cracked the inside of the rim and bounced out.
Kamara led the way with 14 points, while Rucker added 10. Both forwards had a strong day in the paint, posting double-doubles with 10 rebounds each.
The Saints will now depart for a three-game road trip, starting with Frostburg State University on Wednesday, January 25 at 8 p.m.
