Box Score BRIDGEWATER, Va.— The Marymount (Va.) University women's lacrosse team hit the road for a non-conference matchup with Bridgewater (Va.) College on Saturday afternoon, taking an early lead and holding onto it to hand the Eagles their first loss of the season with a 10-8 victory.
The Saints (2-2) opened up scoring for the game just five minutes in, with captains Abby Wescott and Stephanie Keane connecting for the 1-0 lead. Junior Natalie Tinkham won the draw on the restart, which eventually was capitalized on less than a minute later when freshman Jessica Crew found the back of the net on her first of three in the first half.
The Eagles added their first goal by the 23:18 mark, but they would never sway the advantage into their favor. Wescott sent out her second assist of the game to shut down any momentum by Bridgewater when she found Crew for her second-straight finish.
In a four-minute stretch, Bridgewater added two goals to draw things even at three apiece, but the blue and white answered with four straight in just three minutes to take a commanding 7-3 advantage.
In the run, freshman Kelly Campbell notched two of her game-high four, while Wescott and Crew added one each.
Before the break, Bridgewater cut the deficit to three with a free-position goal, but senior Michelle Casteel kicked the scoring back off to open the second half to push it back to a four-goal lead.
The Saints pushed their biggest lead of the game at the 19:54 mark, when Campbell capitalized on a free-position goal to give MU a 10-5 lead. The Eagles inched closer through the rest of the game, scoring three unanswered. But it wasn't enough, as the Saints defense locked down for the 10-8 decision and second-straight win.
Campbell set a new mark in her career with four goals, while Crew recorded three finishes for the day. Wescott sent out a game-high three assists to go with a goal for four points.
On the defensive end, the Saints caused 18 of the Eagles' 23 turnovers including limiting them to 12-of-23 on clear attempts. Wescott, Tinkham and freshman Bridgette Stacom all recorded three caused turnovers in the contest, while Campbell scooped up a game-high four groundballs.
Freshman Holly Reik earned her second win in net, making six saves in her 60 minutes of work.
The women are back in action on Monday, March 7 at Long Bridge Park, as the Saints host Medaille College for another non-conference matchup. First draw is set for 7 p.m.
