Box Score NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The Marymount (Va.) University men's basketball team suffered an 89-59 defeat at the hands of nationally-ranked and top-Capital Athletic Conference seed Christopher Newport University on Saturday afternoon.
The fifth-ranked Captains (24-1, 18-0 CAC) got off to a hot start against the Saints (10-15, 7-11 CAC), but Marymount put forth a tremendous first-half effort to slow down the CNU offense, however, the Saints went into the half trailing by 22.
In the half, six different Saints contributed points led by seven points apiece by senior Rick Narcisse and freshman Tyler Beale, while senior Danny Ferry added five including a three-pointer.
Christopher Newport began to pull away in the second half, though Marymount was invigorated by 14 second-half points by Ferry. Shooting improved into the final 20 minutes for the Saints, bumping up to 44 percent from the floor (11-for-25).
By the midway mark of the second half, the Saints hit an 8-0 stride led by Ferry and Narcisse. Ferry kicked it off with a steal and finish at the other end before hitting two free throws. Narcisse dropped in the front end of a free throw before grabbing an offensive board of the second attempt which would turn into three more points off a long ball by Ferry.
The Captains answered with a three of their own prior to Ferry dropping in his third deep ball to cut the deficit to 26, 76-50, with 5:59 remaining.
CNU's offense kept producing though, riding its lead until the final horn to take the decision.
Ferry finished the day with a team-high 19 points, while Narcisse finished with 13 points. Nine Saints scored points in the effort.
