Box Score RALEIGH, N.C. – Despite a valiant comeback effort in the second half, the Marymount (Va.) University women's lacrosse team suffered a 15-10 loss at the hands of Meredith College on Saturday afternoon.
The Saints (0-1) opened up their 2016 scoring campaign five minutes into their matchup against the Avenging Angels (1-0), responding to a quick Meredith goal that occurred moments before off an unassisted finish by freshman midfielder Bridgette Stacom. A goal by freshman attack Jessica Crew off an assist by sophomore attack Abby Wescott just 30 seconds later gave Marymount the 2-1 lead, but the Avenging Angels answered back with six unanswered goals to take an 8-2 lead into the second half.
Marymount turned up the heat in the second half, going blow-for-blow with Meredith and at one point scoring three-straight goals, but the Saints could not overcome the six-goal first-half deficit and took their first loss of the season.
Three Saints – Crew, Stacom and sophomore midfielder Kellen Cannon– scored two goals apiece. In addition to her first-half goal, Wescott registered a team-high two assists.
Freshman Holly Reik tended the cage for the full 60 minutes, turning away 14 shots for the day.
Marymount looks to rebound in its second game of the season, a road contest against Lynchburg College on Saturday, February 27 at 2 p.m. The Saints' home opener is scheduled for Wednesday, March 2 at 4 p.m., against Goucher College.
