Saints topple Seahawks for second-straight CAC victory

Box Score

ARLINGTON, Va. – The Marymount (Va.) University men's basketball team tallied its second-straight Capital Athletic Conference victory on Monday night, grabbing a first-half lead and riding it to a 77-67 toppling of St. Mary's College of Maryland. With the win, the Saints move to 8-11 for the season, 5-7 in the CAC.

The offense saw scoring from nine Saints paced by seniors Danny Ferry and Rick Narcisse with 21 and 18 points, respectively. Ferry knocked in five three pointers behind 50-percent shooting from behind the arc, while Narcisse went 10-for-14 from the free-throw line. Freshman Tyler Beale also added a double-figure scoring game with 10 points, his second double-digit game this season.

MU got the crowd into the game early following a drive to the rim by Narcisse for the finish and drawing the foul for the and-one play. The quick three-point lead was erased on the next series, seeing the Seahawks drop a long ball in to draw it even. This trend kept up for the opening 10 minutes of the game, trading the lead six times.

The lead would sway no more by the 10:07 mark of the first half, as the Saints claimed the final lead change when sophomore D'Ondre Stockman dished the ball to junior Michael Anderson at the top of the arc who cashed in the three pointer as the shot clock expired for the 19-17 advantage.

The Anderson finish ignited some momentum for the Saints and it continued to build on the next offensive series when senior Colin Burkhart followed a Ferry three-point attempt with a tip-in finish at the rim. By the end of the half, MU worked up the lead to eight points, 33-25, to carry into the half.

The Saints picked up right where they left off at the end of the first half, opening up the final 20 minutes with an 11-5 run to push the advantage to 14. Ferry kicked off the stretch with a lay in to push the first double-digit advantage and followed up a Seahawk three pointer with a three pointer of his own. The run continued with a Narcisse and-one, a free throw by Anderson and capping it off with another Burkhart tip in.

St. Mary's would get as close as five points the rest of the way, but Marymount held strong on the offensive end up until the final horn. In the closing two minutes, the Saints went 11-for-12 from the free-throw line.

Marymount shot 42.6 percent from the floor (23-for-54), while putting in 34 points in the paint. On the defensive end, the Saints forced 16 Seahawk turnovers including eight steals. Narcisse recorded a game-high three steals, while Beale swatted away a game-high three blocks.

The men are back in action on Wednesday, February 3, as they continue their four-game home stand. Marymount will take on Southern Virginia University in the Verizon Sports Arena for a conference tilt. Tipoff is set for 8 p.m.
