Box Score WASHINGTON, D.C. – Two second-half goals sank the Marymount (Va.) University women's soccer team against Goucher College on Saturday afternoon, as the Gophers took a 2-0 decision to open the D.C. Soccer Classic hosted by Catholic University of America.
In a game that was pushed for several hours due to inclement weather, the Saints (3-2) couldn't get the offense started through the first 45 minutes. Senior goalkeeper Erin Harris put together a great effort in the net, keeping Goucher off the board with four impressive saves in the first half.
Early in the second half, senior Lexi Swartz took the first shot of the game for the Saints, but missed wide. It wouldn't be long after that Goucher's Stephanie Budrock finally got one by Harris to put the Gophers up 1-0.
Sophomore Caitlin Pacilio would answer with a shot off a corner kick from Swartz but was blocked by the Gophers defense.
Swartz would get another chance at a corner kick where she connected with freshman Brooke Hillenbrand. Hillenbrand fired a shot on target, but swift hands by Goucher's Julianna Harkavy kept MU off the board.
The Saints would have one more chance to score in the 71st minute. Junior Lyndsie Iwata sent a perfect ball behind the Gopher defense where junior Chloe McAuliffe sprinted to the ball. Pushing it forward towards the 18-yard box, the Goucher keeper would slow McAuliffe down just enough for a defender to close out on her quickness and push the ball out of bounds on the goal line.
Goucher's Samantha Turner would find the net one more time for the Gophers to finish the game at 2-0.
Harris finished with six saves for the game.
The women will look to get back into the win column on Sunday for day two of the D.C. Soccer Classic. The Saints will take on host Catholic at 5 p.m., in Cardinal Stadium.
