Captains Sail Past Women's Lacrosse

Box Score

Newport News, Va. – Despite four goals from freshman Abby Wescott, the Marymount women's lacrosse team proved utterly stumped by Christopher Newport on Saturday afternoon.  The Saints dropped the 18-5 decision at Captains Turf Field, slipping to 4-9 on the season and 2-4 in league play with the CAC loss.

The Captains pocketed ten first-half goals to firmly corner the visiting Saints.  While Wescott was able to even the contest at 1-1 in the opening two minutes, the host simply gained momentum and never looked back.

Six unanswered strikes from CNU punctuated the next ten minutes, with Wescott notching her second to break the Captains hot streak.  The rookie pulled Marymount within five, 7-2, with 13:28 remaining.  Another three consecutive blasts from Christopher Newport saw that margin extend to eight, 10-2, by the 7:02 mark.  Wescott continued her stellar day, securing her hat trick with just 1:02 left to play in the half.

The Captains exploded for five goals to kick off the second frame, with Natalie Tinkham finally snapping the bombardment with a strike at the 16:20 mark – cutting the CNU edge to 15-4.

Though the host responded promptly with a goal with 15:09 showing, Wescott – again – danced around the Captains backline to blister the back of the net at the 9:41 mark.  Unfortunately, Christopher Newport would have the final say – netting a pair in the closing ten minutes to secure the 18-5 advantage.

Marymount returns to action on Wednesday when it hosts No. 6 Salisbury in a CAC showdown.  Start time is slated for 4:00 p.m. at Long Bridge Park.
