Box Score Arlington, Va. – The Marymount men's basketball squad downed York (Pa.) on Saturday afternoon, using last-minute heroics to sneak past the Spartans, 58-54. The Saints improve to 17-4 on the season and 11-3 in league play.
As it stands now, Marymount needs just one win to tie the men's basketball program record at 18 – a record that has stood since the 1991-92 season.
Freshman D'Ondre Stockman used a 4-for-8 performance from beyond the arc to register his team-high 17 points. Senior JC Hoellich chipped in 11 points on the night, while Michael Anderson controlled the boards with his team-high six rebounds. Senior Antonio Rouse doled out a game-high five assists in the effort.
The first half proved a point-for-point event – a pattern that would not relent even slightly over the course of the contest.
The Saints' largest lead came late in the opening frame. A familiar occurrence, Danny Ferry used his beyond-the-arc touch to extend the Marymount lead to four, 24-20, with 3:20 left on the clock.
From there, Dmitri Rucker and Rouse each chipped in two points to stretch the advantage even further to six, 28-22. The Spartans converted a layup with just 44 seconds showing, however, to cut the deficit back down to four, 28-24, heading into the break.
The second half saw York steal the lead back almost immediately, using a six-point swing to surpass the Saints, 30-28, by the 17:18 mark.
Stockman drained both a free throw and a three-pointer to eventually knot the score at 32-32 with 16:19 remaining, though Marymount would not lead the Spartans for another five minutes. It was Stockman again at the 11:25 mark, sinking a triple to swipe a one-point lead, 39-38. Marymount never trailed again.
The Saints worked hard to remain ahead, clinging to and maintaining the narrow margins. Marymount was able to stretch the lead to four points on several occasions, but the Spartans never waited long before cutting the deficit back to two.
The score would be knotted four times in the last ten minutes, with the Saints not truly sealing the deal until under a minute remained. A layup from Rucker and a pair from Stockman at the stripe saw Marymount take a four-point lead, 58-54, with just nine seconds showing.
The Saints shot 34.8% (8-for-23) from beyond the arc, and also benefitted largely from their 35 bench points.
Marymount returns to action on Wednesday as it hosts Penn State Harrisburg in CAC action. Tip time is slated for 8 p.m.
