Box Score BUENA VISTA, Va. – Freshman Rodney Ngoh registered a career-high two goals to help guide the Marymount (Va.) University men's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over Southern Virginia University on Wednesday night in Capital Athletic Conference play.
Ngoh, a starting defender for the Saints, entered Wednesday night's match scoring a goal in two of the last three games for MU. That amount doubled following 90 minutes of play, scoring both in the 2-1 victory. The freshman now has a team-leading six goals in his first collegiate season, four of which are game-winning finishes, tied for the best in the conference and 22nd in the nation.
The first of his two goals came in the 26th minute on a set piece for the Saints. Awarded a corner kick on the left side, freshman Andre Ferguson, who has connected with Ngoh on his previous two goals, sent in a lofted ball to the back post where it met the head of Ngoh for the redirection into the left side of the net.
The one-goal lead wouldn't be long lived, as the Knights drew the score even eight minutes later on a penalty kick awarded to SVU in the 34th minute.
Not settling for a draw at the break, the Saints recovered quickly off the game-tying finish with an answer six minutes later. With just five minutes remaining until the break, Marymount put away the finish that played out to be the game winner.
Freshman Chris Cardenas carried the ball to the end line on the right side of the goal. Pulling the defense towards him, Cardenas sent a low ball back up to the top of the 18-yard box where it met the foot of a wide-open Ngoh, who sent in a hard, lined shot into the left side of the cage for the 2-1 advantage.
The second half of the game saw Southern Virginia build up some offense, but the solidity of the Saints' back line captained by senior goalkeeper Logan Cropper kept the Knights off the board to maintain the 2-1 victory. Cropper finished the match with three saves.
The men will continue conference play on Saturday, October 24, as they head to Middletown, Pennsylvania for their final road match of the regular season against Penn State University-Harrisburg. First touch is set for 12 p.m.
