Box Score ARLINGTON, Va. – The Marymount (Va.) University men's soccer team came up just short of a comeback against York College of Pennsylvania on Saturday afternoon at Long Bridge Park, falling 2-1 in Capital Athletic Conference play.
The Spartans jumped out early in this match, scoring two goals in the opening three minutes off the foot of York's Brendan Saberton. Trailing 2-0, the Saints looked to piece together the offense in quick fashion the next several minutes, getting their first shot off in the seventh minute from sophomore Jesse Parada, but it was just off target.
Senior Logan Cropper pulled in his first save of five for the match in the 16th minute, helping Marymount gain a little momentum on the other end of the field. Several shots were fired off by the Saints the next few minutes including the first on target by freshman Marc Mendoza, but Spartan goalkeeper Charlie Johnson kept the Saints off the board with the save.
Taking a 2-0 deficit into the break, Marymount looked to gather itself for the final 45 minutes. In the 51st minute, the blue and white saw its best opportunity at that point in the match come off the foot of junior Max Malone. Dribbling down the middle of the field, Malone fired off a liner to the left top of the goal, but Johnson pulled it in once again to keep the score at 2-0.
By the 84th minute, the Saints finally connected to get within one of the Spartans. A free kick awarded to Marymount to the right of the 18-yard box was taken by freshman Andre Ferguson. Similar to the set up against St. Mary's College of Maryland last week, Ferguson sent in a back-post ball where it met the head of freshman Rodney Ngoh for the finish. The goal is the fourth of the season for the freshman, while Ferguson notched his second assist.
As the time ticked down, the Saints were unable to find another opportunity on net, as the match concluded 2-1.
The men will take the road for their next match on Wednesday, October 21, traveling to Southern Virginia University for another league tilt. First touch is set for 7:30 p.m.
