Box Score Arlington, Va. – The Marymount men's basketball squad downed Mary Washington in dramatic fashion on Saturday afternoon, dropping the Eagles, 65-50, in an exciting CAC tilt. The Saints improve to 15-4 on the season and 9-3 in league play with the win.
The first half saw the Eagles jump out to an 8-0 start, having shut out the Saints for the opening five minutes.
The Saints eventually mustered up a 9-2 run to swipe a brief one-point lead, 15-14, with 9:22 left to play. From there, the lead changed hands multiple times in an electric shot-for-shot affair. By the break, the squads were knotted at 24-24.
Coming out of halftime, the Eagles chipped in a free throw to take the first advantage of the second frame, 25-24. Antonio Rouse responded with a triple to spark a 6-2 Marymount run, putting the host up 33-27 with 16:38 on the clock.
Mary Washington battled back to within one, 35-34, before a scoreless drought ensued, spanning the next minute and a half. It was two shots from the stripe that allowed the Eagles to surpass the Saints, 36-35, with 12:54 showing.
The visitors maintained the lead for a good while afterward, going up by as many as five points several times over the next couple minutes. It was JC Hoellich that finally rounded out a 6-1 run to knot the score at 47-47 with 5:48 remaining in the game.
After a triple gave the Eagles a 50-47 lead, the Saints exuded a palpable sense of urgency, mounting a 9-0 run in response – the highlight being a Danny Ferry long ball at the 3:13 mark.
Another triple from Ferry continued the huge surge in momentum, as the junior guard put the Saints up nine, 59-50, with just 1:54 on the clock.
Ferry continued his hot streak from the charity stripe, draining four free throws over the next 30 seconds to give Marymount a 13-point lead with under a minute left to play.
Another pair from Rouse upped the advantage to 15 points, 65-50, with 47 seconds remaining.
Ferry absolutely dominated from the floor, shooting a stellar 50.0% (7-for-14) with six three-pointers – two in the final three minutes. The junior was 60.0% (6-for-10) from beyond the arc and perfect from the stripe.
Rouse added 16 points on the night, while Hoellich registered a double-double with 14 points and 13 rebounds in the effort.
Marymount returns to action on Wednesday when it hosts Southern Virginia for a midweek CAC showdown. Tip time is slated for 8 p.m.
