Box Score Arlington, Va. – The Marymount men's basketball squad took on Wesley Wednesday night, falling to the visiting Wolverines, 77-68, when all was said and done. The CAC loss drops the Saints to 14-4 on the season and 8-3 in league play.
JC Hoellich cleared the opening tip easily, but a quick Marymount turnover saw the Wolverines jump out to an early 2-0 lead. While the Saints knotted the score multiple times over the first 20 minutes, breaking even proved an insurmountable feat.
An 8-1 Wesley run saw the visitors go up by eight, 19-11, with 9:23 remaining. The Saints flirted with a comeback and clawed within two, 25-23, but another Wolverine rally saw the host denied any such revolt.
Wesley sunk two shots for every Saints' one as the half came to a close, eventually toting a 33-28 advantage into the break.
The second half saw Marymount inch within one, 33-32, courtesy of back-to-back layups from D'Ondre Stockman and Hoellich. The Wolverines made the most of their next several possessions, holding off the Saints if only for the time being.
The paper-thin margins persisted over the next several minutes, with Danny Ferry drilling a triple at the 14:08 mark to bring the Saints within two, 42-40.
A Marymount timeout with 12:06 on the clock sparked some much-needed Saints' energy. Once again, it was Ferry who brought some life to the offense, sinking another long-range bucket to knot the score at 44-44 with 11:54 left to play. Rick Narcisse kept the contest even, negating the next Wolverine jumper with one of his own.
Dmitri Rucker was the next Saint to find net, burying a short-range jumper to give Marymount the 48-46 advantage – ever so briefly. A quick-hitting 9-0 run from the visitors saw the Wolverines swipe a 55-48 lead with 8:22 showing.
Neither team showed much life over the next couple minutes, until Wesley finally found the hoop for a 5-0 run – an apt retort to the Saints' four-point streak from the charity stripe. With just 5:08 on the clock, the Wolverines found themselves up eight, 60-52.
Antonio Rouse promptly cut the deficit to six, 62-56, and a Wesley turnover saw the Saints gain tremendous momentum heading into the final four minutes. Narcisse extended the resurgence with a jumper just moments later – bringing Marymount within four, 62-58, with 3:41 left to play.
A traveling call with just 2:07 remaining gave the Saints a chance to cut the deficit, but the attempted triple came up just short.
The Wolverines chipped in three free throws to extend the lead to nine, 67-58, with 1:29 on the clock. Michael Anderson's two-point effort from the charity stripe proved in vain, as Wesley sunk another pair just moments later to maintain the nine-point advantage, 69-60.
The closing minutes saw an abundance of fouls transpire, with Wesley making the most of its time at the line – shooting a solid 84.2% (16-for-19) from the stripe in the second half.
On the night, the Saints shot 46.2% (24-for-52) from the field – narrowly outdone by the Wolverines, who posted 46.4% (26-for-56) performance in the CAC tilt.
Ferry paced the Saints' offense with 14 points in the effort, while Hoellich and Rouse chipped in 13 apiece.
Marymount returns to action this weekend as it hosts CAC rival Mary Washington. Tip time is slated for 4 p.m. on Saturday.
