Box Score Arlington, Va. – In a heated homecoming tilt under the Long Bridge lights, rival Mary Washington peppered the Saints with two goals per half, good for a 4-0 decision over the Blue and White. Marymount drops to 2-7 on the season and 0-1 in CAC action with the loss.
As any match between the two neighboring CAC schools, the contest proved quite fast-paced and noticeably physical, with several cautions issued throughout the evening.
The Eagles pressured evenly throughout the game, leaving two scores in the first half before adding a pair in the second frame to seal the deal.
After a Marymount foul downed UMW forward Carlos Mendoza in the box, the Eagles were served a penalty kick and a one-on-one chance against Saints keeper Logan Cropper. Mendoza used a stutter-step and a play for misdirection to find the lower left corner to notch the night's first tally in the 15th minute.
With the 1-0 advantage and firm control, the Eagles lined up for a free kick just moments later in the 27th minute. At around the 25-yard mark, Ben Cisse unleashed a laser that discernibly bent around Marymount's line of defensemen before stooping past Cropper in goal.
The Eagles rode the 2-0 lead into halftime, but the team's momentum never lessened.
The Saints mounted several quick attacks early in the second frame, but could never quite locate an open man up-field to finish the play and find the net.
Mary Washington collected its third goal in the 55th minute using clean passes and a triangular formation. Conor Nogueira first slipped a pass through to Jacob Burke on the left, who in turn found Riley Fisher back on the right to complete the effort.
The fourth and final UMW goal came in the 78th minute as a flurry unfolded in front of the Marymount net. Keanu Korkor lobbed a pass into Cisse, who chipped the ball just beyond Cropper to cap the Eagles offensive effort.
Cropper collected six saves in a busy day between the pipes, but falls to 2-7 on the year.
Marymount returns to action on Tuesday when it travels to nearby Hood for a nonconference tilt. Match time is set for 4 p.m.
