Saints Outlast Seahawks in Epic CAC Clash

Box Score

Arlington, Va. – No doubt an instant classic on Saturday afternoon, Marymount dethroned perennial CAC powerhouse St. Mary's – the preseason pick to top the conference again this year.  The Saints battled from start to finish, securing the 66-62 victory and improving to a sterling 7-0 mark on the season.  Marymount sits atop the CAC standings with a perfect 3-0 record in league play.

The win also marks the Saints' first triumph over the Seahawks since the 2009 postseason – an 85-81 overtime triumph at St. Mary's.  With this being said, no current member of the Marymount squad had ever beaten the Maryland-based foe – until today.

Freshman D'Ondre Stockman led all scorers with his game-high 17 points – all of which came in the second half.

The opening frame proved a tight-margined chess match.  The largest lead from either side came courtesy of St. Mary's at the 11:28 mark – a far-from-comfortable 12-8 advantage.

After Marymount battled back to knot the score at 17-17, freshman Dmitri Rucker dropped two free throws with 4:33 left to play in the first half – giving the Saints a paper-thin 19-17 lead.

The squads knotted the score twice more before the clock cleared – Marymount using a buzzer-beating layup from Rucker to tote a 28-25 advantage into the break.

The second half opened with a point-for-point volley – four lead changes transpiring in the opening three minutes alone.  The Saints eventually found fortitude enough to muster a 7-0 run, though the game proved far from over.

With the 44-36 lead in tow, the Saints desperately tried to quell the Seahawks surging offense.  The visitors responded with urgency – posting a 9-3 rally to tie the score at 47-47.

From there, the teams battled shot-for-shot.  The constantly wavering margin proved too small to truly build on – that is, until Stockman found his rhythm beyond the arc.

The rookie used his third three-pointer of the half to knot the score at 57-57.  After Marymount denied St. Mary's on their subsequent possession, Stockman drained his fourth and final three – putting the Saints on top, 60-57, with just 3:17 remaining.

The Seahawks clawed within one with 3:03 left, but that layup proved the last shot either team would make from the field.

Countless missed shots paired with extremely high tension led to a string of pivotal free throws down the stretch.

The Seahawks converted three shots from the line to tiptoe past the Saints, 62-60, with 1:54 remaining.  Those points, however, would be the last posted by the visitors.

Marymount closed the epic battle with a 6-0 run, using two free throws from Stockman and four more from senior Jesse Konadu to seal the deal.

Konadu and classmate JC Hoellich each scored in the double-digits, pouring in 15 and 16 points, respectively, to round out the Saints' attack.  Hoellich also hauled in nine boards on the night, with sophomore Michael Anderson registering seven assists.

Marymount returns to action on Tuesday, December 16, as it takes on Lynchburg in a midweek nonconference tilt.  Game time is set for 4 p.m. in Lynchburg, Va.
