WVB: Saints Fall to F&M in Four Sets

ARLINGTON, Va. — Marymount lost to Franklin & Marshall 3-1 on Tuesday, falling 12-25, 13-25, 25-23, 20-25. The Saints moved from an 18-20 deficit to a 23-21 lead in the third set on the way to their lone set win, but the push was not enough to change the match result.

Franklin & Marshall put the Saints behind 4-0 to start the first set, with Carly Campbell serving three straight aces before assisting Melissa Benkowitz on a kill. The Saints worked back within 6-5 behind kills from Brigid Donahue and Emerson Aber and service aces by Hailey LaBonte and Eliana Knaub, but Franklin & Marshall followed with seven consecutive points, including a Melody Butzer ace and a Mia Mascherino kill, to move ahead 13-5. The Saints added points on kills from Elizabeth Stackpole, Donahue, Knaub and Sabrina Schoeberlein, but Franklin & Marshall kept control late, reached set point on Ceci Connolly's kill and closed the set 25-12 on a Jillian Surkis kill.

Aber opened the second set with a service ace for the Saints, but Franklin & Marshall turned a 2-2 tie into a 5-2 lead with a Claire Kelly kill and two Saints attack errors. The Saints stayed within 8-6 after a Knaub and Angela McKenzie block, a Knaub kill and a Caylee Walsh ace, but Franklin & Marshall answered with three straight points to move ahead 11-6. After Layla Scott's kill made it 11-7, Franklin & Marshall built the margin to 20-8 behind kills from Jillian Surkis, Melissa Benkowitz, Ceci Connolly and Kelly, along with service aces by Maile Sugamura and Carly Campbell. Franklin & Marshall reached 24-9 on Kendall Lee's kill before the Saints took four straight points behind a Knaub kill, an Ava Humphries ace and a Stackpole block, but Avery Grantham closed the set for Franklin & Marshall at 25-13.

Franklin & Marshall opened the third set with the first three points, but the Saints worked back from a 10-6 deficit as Donahue's kill started a four-point push and Aber added an ace before McKenzie and Knaub combined on a block to tie it at 10-10. The set stayed tight through the middle stages before Franklin & Marshall moved ahead 20-17 on a Maile Sugamura service ace. The Saints answered after a service error, with Aber serving through two aces and setting Donahue for a kill that put the Saints in front 22-20. Franklin & Marshall later tied the set at 23-23, but a Mia Mascherino attack error gave the Saints set point and Aber finished the 25-23 win with a kill from Donahue.

The Saints traded points early in the fourth set, tying it at 3-3 on consecutive Franklin & Marshall attack errors before kills by Stackpole and Schoeberlein helped the home side move in front 6-5. Franklin & Marshall broke a 7-7 tie with four straight points, using kills by Mya Anderson and Melissa Benkowitz, a Mia Mascherino ace and a Saints attack error to take an 11-7 lead, but the Saints pulled back within 12-11 behind kills from Scott, Donahue and Knaub. Franklin & Marshall kept the Saints from drawing even, later moving from 19-16 to 22-16 on a Benkowitz kill, a block by Avery Grantham and Claire Kelly, and a Kelly kill. The Saints got late kills from Donahue and Schoeberlein, but Ceci Connolly closed the set with a kill to give Franklin & Marshall a 25-20 win.
