SOFT: MU Picks Up Win in Day One of Triangle Classic

RALEIGH, N.C. -- Marymount softball took on a pair of foes on Saturday, starting their two-day trek at the Triangle Classic at Walnut Creek Softball Complex.

Picking up a win ove The College of New Jersey in the opener, the Saints settled for a split at the end of the day, falling in a tight battle with Eastern Mennonite. 

MARYMOUNT 5 - TCNJ 3
  • Down 2-0 heading into the fifth inning, the Saints bats began to show up. Gracie Himmelman got the Saints on the board with an RBI single, scoring Haylee Carpenter who led off the frame with a single of her own.
  • Still threatening in the fifth, Haley Greer knocked an RBI single up the middle to score Himmelman and even up the tally. Valeria Gutierrez De Oliveira drew a crucial walk to bring in the third run of the inning for the Saints to take the lead.
  • TCNJ pushed across a run in the bottom of the fifth to tie up the scoreboard.
  • Kaylee Atkins came through for MU, punching a single down the right field line to score Greer and give the Saints the lead again. Gutierrez De Oliveira scored on a passed ball to give some cushion.
  • Morgan Maslock locked it down in the bottom of the seventh to earn her first win of the season in the circle.
  • Bailey Demusz tossed a strong 5.0 innings of work, allowing just two earned runs with a pair of strikeouts.
  • Greer had three hits in the win with a double and an RBI.
  • Himmelman finished the game with a pair of hits and an RBI.
  • Grace Gilbert, Gutierrez De Oliveira, Atkins, Carpenter, and Tara Corcoran each added a hit.
EMU 3 - MARYMOUNT 2
  • The Saints' bats went cold in the second game of the day, mustering just three hits.
  • Samantha Richtol knocked an RBI double in the fifth inning of action.
  • Himmelman and Mady Archer each had a hit in the loss.
  • Despite earning the loss in the circle, Emma McCormack threw 3.0 solid innings with a pair of strikeouts.
UP NEXT
  • The Saints will finish up their stint at the Triangle Classic tomorrow, taking on two new teams.
  • They will play Randolph College at 9:30 AM before finishing off the day with Averett at noon.
