Arlington, Va. -- The Marymount University women's softball team had their home season opener this Wednesday afternoon, facing off against Washington College (Md.) in a double header at Nations Youth Academy. In a hard fought battle and some extra innings, the Saints fell short in both games.
WASH. COLLEGE 11 MARYMOUNT 9
- In the first game, the Saints battled it out into extra innings.
- The first inning went scoreless for both teams.
- The Saints took a 1-0 lead in inning two after Ashleigh Mannion ran home from Samantha Richtol doubling from bat.
- Keeping a 1-0 lead until the fourth inning, Washington College began to put some on the board to take a 3-1 lead.
- By the bottom of the fourth, the Saints trailed 3-2 with an extra run earned by Samantha Richtol by Haylee Carpenter tripling.
- By inning six, both teams put up two more points with Mady Archer and Ashleigh Mannion adding to the board.
- The Saints tied it up in the seventh inning with an unearned run by Valeria Gutierrez De Oliveira.
- Valeria Gutierrez De Oliveira led the team with three RBI's.
- The team fell short in extra innings.
WASH. COLLEGE 9 MARYMOUNT 4
- With game one under the belt, the Saints went back to the field for more action.
- The teams stayed evenly matched with both teams putting up one point in the first inning.
- Saint Valeria Gutierrez De Oliveira ran home for the first point, which was unearned.
- Inning two kept the score at 1-1.
- Washington College put up four more runs on the board in inning three which the Saints put up one with Samantha Papp running home after Ashleigh Mannion doubled.
- The final two runs were Grace Gilbert both times, giving her half of the Saints runs in the second game.
- Valeria Gutierrez De Oliveira and Ashleigh Mannion each recorded a pair of RBI's.
UP NEXT
- The Saints hit the road to face off against Randolph-Macon College and New Paltz this weekend on February 28th.
- They will face off against Randolph-Macon College at 1:15 and New Paltz at 3:30.
