WVB: Humphries Joins 1,000 Dig Club; Saints Sweep Home Tri-Match

ARLINGTON, Va. -- Marymount women's volleyball secured a pair of home wins over Eastern and Eastern Mennonite Saturday afternoon. 

Senior Ava Humphries secured her spot in the record books, surpassing 1,000 career digs during the second match of the day, as the Saints improve to 8-7 overall on the season with AEC play looming.

The Saints achieved a season-high of 101 digs in the game, demonstrating their defensive prowess. Emerson Aber also recorded a season-high of 18 digs, contributing significantly to this achievement.

EMU built a 7-2 lead and later stretched it to 16-8, getting service aces from Emerson Moats and Ella Ollet along the way. The Saints cut into the gap from there, with an Eliana Knaub kill, an Emerson Aber ace, another Knaub kill, and a Hailey LaBonte ace helping pull the Saints within 17-16. After EMU moved back in front 20-18, the Saints tied the set at 20-20, then went ahead 22-20 on an Elizabeth Stackpole kill and an Ava Humphries ace. The Royals answered with the final five rallies, including a kill by Alyssa Carr and two blocks involving Haley Atkins, to take the set 25-22.

The Saints built a 6-1 lead in the second set, getting a Brigid Donahue kill from Renae Rohrer, a Hailey LaBonte ace, and a block by Angela McKenzie and Knaub during the early stretch. EMU pulled within 7-6 on Rebekah Allen's ace, but Stackpole, Sabrina Schoeberlein, and Alexis Bumah each had kills as the Saints pushed the margin back to 11-6. After EMU closed to 14-11 and later 20-15, the Saints kept control with a Donahue kill, a Schoeberlein block, and a Schoeberlein kill that made it 22-17. Braelyn Ottolini's serve helped finish the set, with a Hailey LaBonte kill and Bumah kill from Ottolini closing the Saints' 25-17 win.

The Saints opened the third set with four straight points, getting a Schoeberlein kill from Emerson Aber, a Hailey LaBonte ace, and a McKenzie kill after an EMU service error. EMU worked back within 13-11 on three consecutive kills, but Knaub answered from Aber and the Saints added two more points, including a Schoeberlein-McKenzie block, to move ahead 16-11. The Royals cut the gap to 17-14 before another Schoeberlein kill and an attack error pushed the Saints to 19-14, and Bumah followed with a kill for a 20-15 advantage. Bumah achieved a season-high of 10 kills and recorded a season-high of 10 points in the match. Donahue put down consecutive late kills to make it 23-16, and after an EMU service error brought up set point, Knaub finished the 25-18 set with a kill from Aber.

A 3-0 EMU start put the Saints behind early in the fourth set, but kills by Knaub and McKenzie helped the Saints close to 4-3. The Royals created separation from 6-4 with six straight points on Emma Rogers' serve, getting kills from Haley Atkins and Alyssa Carr along with a Rogers ace before Schoeberlein ended the run with a kill at 12-5. The Saints later scored three straight on Emerson Aber's serve to trim the score to 14-10, with Donahue and McKenzie combining on a block and Knaub adding a kill from Rohrer, but EMU pushed the score back to 18-11. Bumah and Humphries helped the Saints get back to 20-16 with a kill and a service ace, but the Royals closed the set 25-19 on a Rogers kill.

The Saints scored the first two points of the fifth set, including a Donahue kill from Emerson Aber, before EMU answered with three straight for a 3-2 lead. Knaub tied it with a kill, and after Hailey LaBonte put the Saints ahead 4-3, the set was even again at 4-4 on a service error. McKenzie's kill started a stretch in which the Saints won seven of eight rallies, with McKenzie adding two more kills and Bumah putting down consecutive kills for a 12-5 lead. EMU got back within 12-7, but Ottolini answered with a kill, and the Saints closed the set and match at 15-9 on a Lindsay Bly attack error.

Eastern built a 13-7 lead in the first set with repeated scoring from Piper Xeller and Veronica Faber, but the Saints cut the gap to 13-12 behind an Eliana Knaub kill, a Hailey LaBonte ace, an Angela McKenzie kill and two Eastern attack errors. The Saints later pulled even at 17-17 on consecutive Eastern attack errors, including a block by Elizabeth Stackpole and Alexis Bumah, before Eastern answered and held a 20-18 edge. Brigid Donahue's kill and consecutive Emerson Aber service aces moved the Saints in front 21-20, and Donahue added two more kills before combining with McKenzie on a block to make it 24-20. Eastern scored the next two points, but Knaub closed the set with a kill for a 25-22 Saints win.

The Saints built a 4-0 lead early in the second set, but Eastern erased it and went in front 7-5 behind kills from Alexis Standford and Veronica Faber and two service aces from Alyssa Heffner. The Saints came back from an 8-6 deficit as Stackpole's kill and Ava Humphries' first ace tied the set at 8-8, before an Eastern attack error and another Humphries ace made it 10-8. After Eastern later led 15-14, Knaub tied the set, and McKenzie served three straight aces for an 18-15 Saints lead before Sabrina Schoeberlein's kill made it 19-16. The Saints stayed in front with late kills from Donahue and Bumah to reach 24-19, and after Eastern scored the next two points, a service error closed the set at 25-21.

Eastern scored the first four points of the third set before the Saints worked back into it, getting kills from Knaub and Schoeberlein and a block by Stackpole and Knaub to pull within 5-4. After Eastern moved back ahead 7-5, Bumah and Donahue put down kills to tie the set, and the Saints later moved in front 12-9 behind Bumah kill, an Emerson Aber ace and a McKenzie kill. The Saints stretched the margin to 20-13 with help from a Hailey LaBonte ace, kills by Schoeberlein and Stackpole, and Eastern attack errors, but Eastern answered with points from Sarah Furey and Maddie Golia to get back to 20-16. The Saints held off the late push, reaching set point on a Schoeberlein kill before Knaub closed the set with a kill for a 25-20 Saints win.
