WSOC: Saints Sting Hornets in Season Opening Win

ARLINGTON, Va. -- Marymount women's soccer opened up the home slate of Marymount Athletics competition on Friday afternoon, taking on Shenandoah University in front of a packed crowd at Long Bridge Park. 

Taking down Shenandoah 1-0, the first win against the Hornets since 2008, Marymount moves to a quick 1-0-0 record.

 NOTABLE

  • Nicole Alvarado claimed the first goal of the season during the 68th minute, striking from just outside the box with her left foot and sailing the ball in the top left corner. 
  • In her debut as a Saint, Arianna Garcia made an immediate impact firing three shots on goal to showcase her attacking presence. 
  • Starting goalkeeper Mara Dufour tallied 11 saves, earning a shutout to open the season with a standout performance. 
  • The Saints played an aggressive game with 4 fouls in the first half and 8 in the second half. 

HOW IT HAPPENED 

  • The opening half was a hard-fought battle, with Marymount (7 shots) and Shenandoah (8 shots) going toe-to-toe in a fast-paced, evenly matched contest. 
  • The Saints' backline stayed composed under pressure, turning away every Hornets' attempt to keep the match scoreless heading into halftime. 
  • Both sides looked to gain an edge with waves of substitutions, adding fresh energy throughout the match. 
  • In the 68th minute, the breakthrough came as Marymount found the back of the net to claim the lead. 
  • With Shenandoah pushing forward in the final minutes, the Saints' defense held strong, refusing to allow the Hornets an equalizer. 
  • Marymount's resilience paid off, as they secured a 1–0 shutout victory to open the season on a high note.

  • The Saints now hit the road for a stretch of away games, beginning with a trip to Baltimore, Md., to face Goucher College at 4 p.m. on Wednesday.
