MSOC: Saints Season Opener Ends in Stalemate

LYNCHBURG, Va. -- Marymount men's soccer kicked off their 2025 season away from their home turf at Randolph College on Friday afternoon. Going toe-to-toe, the teams finished the evening tied up with a final score of 1-1.

The Saints start their season with a 0-0-1 record.

 NOTABLE

  • Erick Shoetter-Rojas claimed the first goal of the season with a successful penalty kick in the second half.
  • Shoetter-Rojas dominated offensively, taking the most shots out of any Saint (3), with two being on target.
  • Jefferson Lopez Coreas added two shots on goal.
  • The teams played aggressively, with a total of 3 yellow cards issued to each team, all in the second half.
  • Marymount's offensive force was right on target, with 6 out of 8 shots being on goal.  

HOW IT HAPPENED 

  • The game was quick to action with two fouls on the Saints.
  • Following the fouls, the Saints fell behind after a WildCat goal.
  • After the goal, the Saints' defending line never allowed another, keeping the Wildcats at one goal for the next 75 minutes. 
  • The first half closed out with the Saints still trailing 0-1.
  • After the huddle at halftime, the Saints came out ready for action.
  • The defending line stayed strong, and the offense put on a show.
  • Three minutes into the second half, Erick Shoetter-Rojas scored on a penalty kick.
  • After Shoetter-Rojas's goal, the field started to heat up, with one Saint  being issued a yellow card in the 51st minute. 
  • Two more yellow cards were issued to WildCat players in the 56th and 58th minute.
  • Three additional yellow cards were issues, but the score remained the same.
  • The aggressive second half came to a close and the game ended in a tie. 

UP NEXT

  • The Saints have a quick turn around and stay on the road this Sunday game at Hampden-Sydney College.
  • Kick off is slated for 2 PM.

"We certainly didn't play our best in the first half and they took advantage of it, But we responded with a very solid second half full of chances to win. Knowing as a team you can come back on the road is a huge early lesson we learned about ourselves and that will pay off down the road."
