WINCHESTER, Va. -- With timely hitting and gutsy performances on the mound, Marymount baseball advances to the Atlantic East Championship on Saturday for the first time since 2021.
The Saints will look to reclaim the title and bring an AEC Championship trophy back to the Lee Center.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- After a pair of scoreless innings from starter Liam Progulske, the Saints came across home plate first in the bottom of the third with starting centerfielder Kevin Knoess scoring off a wild pitch.
- The Knights evened up the tally in the top of sixth inning.
- Designated hitter for the day, Jonathan McMcath, came through in a big way in the bottom of the sixth inning, knocking a towering three-run blast to give Marymount the lead again.
- After two in the seventh and one in the eighth, Neumann tied it up again heading into the bottom of the eighth inning.
- In the bottom of the eighth with two away, the Saints scrapped together a trio of run, highlighted by a two-RBI single off the bat of Jack McCarthy, to take a three-run lead into the top of the ninth.
- Sean Quinn came in and shut the door to earn the save, getting a little help from right fielder Jordan Dickson securing the rare 9-3 putout to take away a hit to open the frame.Â
- Andrew Schaeb went 3-for-5 driving in a run and stealing a bag.
- McMath had three RBI with his big blast in the sixth.
- Quincy Via and Kevin Knoess each had a pair of hits.
- Bobby Leitzel, McCarthy, Ryan Cuadros, Daniel Fernandez, and Dickson each added a hit in the Tournament win.
- Progulske provided 6.0 quality innings for the Saints in the start. The righty struck out four and allowed just one earned run.
