Arlington, VA. – Marymount women's lacrosse delivered a commanding performance on both ends of the field, shutting down Gwynedd Mercy 23-2.
This brings their record to 15-2 overall and 5-0 in conference.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Griffins gained the ball first but were swiftly shut down by the Marymount defense. The failed attack by the Griffins turned into an attack for Marymount. First to score was Marymount's Natalia Ortiz assisted by Tess Valentino. The Saints' attack did not stop at one and the first goal was followed with another two quick back to back goals by Arayla Garcia unassisted and Ella Baker assisted by Taylor Chepren. Gwynedd's defense kept the Marymount attack at bay for several minutes before the Saints' continued their scoring streak with three goals in one minute. The goals were scored by Baker assisted by Riley Love, Bailey Gehler unassisted, and a second goal by Gehler assisted by Baker. After a timeout for the Griffins, The Saints finished out the quarter with four additional goals. The goals were claimed by A. Garcia assisted by Chepren, Gehler unassisted, A. Garcia unassisted, and Baker from a free position. The Saints had a total of ten goals at the end of the first quarter.
- First to score in two quarters, Ortiz gained the first goal in the second quarter. The Saints and Griffins each made several offensive attacks resulting in near misses at goal. Marymount was first to find the back of the net again, scoring from a free position shot by Kaylee Heath. Emily Prensky scored the last goal of the half for the Saints with no assist. The Griffins were able to gain two goals in the last minutes of the half to break the shutout. The half ended in score of 13-2.
- A. Garcia opened the second half with a successful draw control that started the attack and resulted in a goal by Valentino assisted by Love. A. Garcia goes two for two to start the second half, gaining the draw control and setting up the opportunity for the attack to score. The second goal in the half was scored by Ortiz and assisted by Baker. Keeping on the attack, Marymount shut down a clear attempt by Gwynedd and turned it into a score for the Saints. The goal was earned by Baker unassisted. Valentino kept the pressure on the Griffins, causing a turn over before scoring a goal unassisted. A Garcia continued her streak of successful draw controls resulting in goals with a third opportunity started at A. Garcia. The goal was shot by Baker and assisted by Love. Two more goals were scored by the Saints before time ended in the third quarter. The goals were scored by Gehler unassisted and Baker assisted by Love.
- Siezing opportunities, Ortiz was first to score in three quarters after her goal unassisted to start the final quarter. A. Garcia continued her success in the draw with another draw control to set up the Marymount attack. A goal was scored by Love in a man up situation assisted by Gehler. The final goal of the game was scored by the Saints' Heath unassisted to end the game 23-2 with three shut out quarters for the Marymount defense.
- Notable moments by the Saints: Ella Baker led the Saints in goals scored with six goals. Riley Love contributed in four assists. Arayla Garcia had nine successful draw controls followed closely by Abby Dunn with seven. Hannah Smith had two saves against the Griffins.
