Reading, PA. - Marymount women's lacrosse bounces back with a win against Alvernia University.
This brings their record to 4-1 overall.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Saints' defense started the game by preventing two goal attempts by the Golden Wolves. The Saints' defense forced the first shot of the game high and wide. The second goal attempt was a free position shot saved by Hannah Smith. The Saints turned the save from Smith into an immediate press on attack that resulted in the first goal of the game by Natalia Ortiz.
- Marymount continued the offensive press throughout the rest of the first quarter, beginning with a quick second goal for the Saints scored by Tess Valentino and assisted by Riley Love. The first quarter ended with a 6-1 score. The additional goals were scored by Arayla Garcia, Ortiz, and second and third goal by Valentino.
- The second quarter was a battle of the defenses with neither team scoring in the first eight minutes. Taylor Chepren broke the stalemate, scoring off a quick assist from Valentino. Marymount scored twice more in the second quarter with goals from Jillian Blair on a free position and Kaylee Heath with an assist form Arayla Garcia. The score at the half was 9-3
- Marymount's Bailey Gehler and Abby Dunn started off the second half with three successful draw controls that resulted in back to back to back goals for the Saints by Love, Gehler, and Ella Baker. Refusing to let the Golden Wolves gain any advantage, Valentino and Ortiz added a set of goals in less than a minute for Marymount. Ending the third quarter Ortiz and Baker contributed another two goals to the bord with the help of Blair and Mackenzie Morrissette with the assists. The quarter ended with no added goals for Alvernia making the score 16-3.
- The fourth quarter saw many new faces for the Saints with nearly all players seeing the field for Marymount. The Saints played a great game of possession in the fourth only allowing one final goal for the Golden Wolves while allowing Marymount to explore new player combinations on the field. The Saints had no additional goals in the fourth, ending the game with a win of 16-4.
- Notable moments by the Saints: Natalia Ortiz and Tess Valentino led the Saints in scoring, each with four goals. Abby Dunn claimed four draw controls, contributing to the Saints offensive advantage. Hannah Smith backed the defense with seven saves and only allowed four goals against.
UP NEXT
- The Saints will start their spring break series on the to Florida where they will face Arcadia University on Monday March 10th at 3pm and Skidmore College on Wednesday March 12th at 9:30am. Both games will be played in Clearwater, FL.
- The Saints' next home appearance will be on Thursday March 20th, where the Saints will face off against Mount Holyoke College at 4pm. The game will take place at Long Bridge Park.
