Softball Sweeps the Doubleheader Against Nittany Lions

Abington, PA- Marymount claims victory on the road against Penn State Abington, winning game one 3-1 and game two 7-4.

After games fifteen and sixteen, the Saints hold a record of 5-11.

GAME ONE: 3-1
  • The Saints started at the plate, gaining one hit but no runs during their first at bat. The hit was earned by Kammie Brown with a triple to left field. In the field Marymount put out the first batter with a fly ball caught in left field. Out number two came from a pop up to short stop. Out number three was earned from a pop up to second base.
  • In the top of the second, Marymount's Ashleigh Mannion and Kaylee Atkins each earned a spot on base. Mannion singled to right center and Atkins followed Mannion with a single to shortstop. Both Mannion and Atkins were left on base at the end of the inning. The Saints earned their outs in the bottom of the second from three strike outs from the pitching circle. The third inning saw no hits or runs for the Saints or Nittany Lions, continuing the 0-0 stalemate.
  • Marymount started their fourth at bat with a runner on base after Kaylynn Johnson was walked by the pitcher. After an out, Johnson stole second and made room at first for Haley Greer who was the second walk of the inning. After a second out was gained by the Nittany Lions, Kaylee Atkins stepped up to the plate, hitting a double to center field and batting in both Johnson and Greer. In the field, the Saints earned a quick three up three down securing the early lead. The score at the end of the fourth was 2-0 with Marymount leading.
  • The top of the fifth saw one hit by Leila Hernandez who singled to centerfield, but no additional runs were scored for the Saints. Penn State Abington earned their first run of the game, keeping the lead narrow for the Saints. The outs in the bottom of the inning were from at put out at first, a fly out to center field, and a pop up to first. The fifth inning ended with a score of 2-1
  • Hailey Leamer single to center field in the top of the sixth, but no additional hits or runs were made by the Saints. Marymount defended the field refusing the Nittany Lions' attempts at scoring.
  • The Saints started the final inning of the game with a double to right center field by Atkins. Hernandez advanced Atkins to third and earned herself a spot on first with a successful bunt. Hernandez took advantage of Atkins scoring position on third to further advance herself by stealing second. Brown reached first on a throwing error by the third base player, creating a bases loaded scenario for the next batter. Samantha Cinotti flied out to right field but created an opportunity for Atkins to score at home. Hernandez and Brown were left on base at the end of the at bat. The Saints finished the game in the field with a quick three up three down, cementing their 3-1 victory in game one.
  • Notable moments by the Saints: Kaylee Atkins led the Saints for hits earned with three hits during her three at bats. Kaylynn Johnson, Haley Greer, and Kaylee Atkins all scored one run to earn the win for the Saints. Haley Greer showed out for the Saints with eight put outs during the game. Bailey Demusz pitched all seven innings and earned seven strikeouts.
GAME TWO: 7-4
  • Continuing the momentum from game one, the Saints kept their bats warm to start the top of the first. Hernandez was the first on base with a successful bunt towards third. Hernandez stole second to make room for Cinotti who was walked by the circle. Johnson claimed a spot at first off a fielding error by the Nittany Lions' short stop, creating a bases loaded opportunity. Atkins was walked by the circle, bringing Hernandez home to score the first run for the Saints. Mannion furthered the early lead by singling to center field and advancing both Cinotti and Johnson home. Marymount took the field and denied all hit and run attempts made by Penn State Abington. The first inning ended with a score of 3-0.
  • Marymount was three up and three down in the top of the second with no runs or hits. Marymount gained their outs against the Nittany Lions at bat with a strike out from the circle, a failed bunt put out at first, and a fly out in left field. The score remained 3-0 at the end of the second.
  • Marymount had a second three up three down at bat in the top of the third with no hits and no runs. The Saints defended the field allowing the Nittany Lions one run. The outs in the field were earned from a pop up to second base and a double play from a pop up to second. The third inning score was 3-1.
  • The fourth inning saw one hit for the Saints. The hit was earned by Samantha Richtol with a single to shortstop. No runs were scored by the Saints in the fourth. Penn State Abington added two runs to the scoreboard in the bottom of the fourth to even the score 3-3.
  • The Saints regained their lead in the top of the fifth. Hernandez earned a place on first by holding her swing for a walk by the pitching circle. Cinotti advanced Hernandez to third with a single that earned her a place on second after a throwing error gave further advancement opportunity. Atkins made ball contact that brought Hernandez in to score, but was denied a place on first from a put out by the pitcher. Samantha Papp singled to center field and advanced Cinotti to third. Leamer walked, placing both Cinotti and Papp in scoring positions. Richtol reached first on a fielding error by the second base position. Cinotti took advantage of the error to score for the Saints. Papp, Leamer, and Richtol were left on base at the end of the at bat. In the bottom of the fifth the Nittany Lions were able to bring another run home, maintaining the close score with the Saints. The score at the end of the fifth was 5-4.
  • Brown started the at bat with a single to right field. Adding a second on base, Hernandez made it to first on a walk. A wild pitch gave both Brown and Hernandez advancement opportunity into scoring positions. Cinotti hit a single to centerfield that brought in both Brown and Hernandez, increasing the Saints' lead. Cinotti was left on base at the end of the at bat. No additional runs were scored by the Nittany Lions in the bottom of the inning.
  • The game ended with one more hit for Marymount by Jenna Jew who earned a double in the gap at left center. No runs were scored by either team in the seventh, ending the game with a score of 7-4 and a second victory for the Saints.
  • Notable moments by the Saints: Leila Hernandez led the Saints in runs scored, earning three runs for Marymount. Samantha Cinotti, Kaylee Atkins, and Ashleigh Mannion each had two RBIs contributing to the win. Samantha Richtol led for put outs, claiming eight outs in the seven innings. Bailey Demusz was awarded the win, she pitched four of the seven innings and added four strike outs to her stat count.
UP NEXT
  • The Saints are on the road Wednesday March 26th for a doubleheader against Stevenson University. The games will have a start time of 3pm and 5pm, taking place in Owings Mills, MD.
  • The Saints will return home on Saturday March 29th for a doubleheader against Immaculata. The games will have start times of 1pm and 3pm and be played at Barcroft Park.
