TYSONS, Va. -- Marymount baseball took on Catholic University, who are receiving votes on both the D3baseball.com and ABCA national polls, Sunday afternoon at Capital One Park.
Timely hitting and shutdown pitching pushed the Saints to a 5-4 win over the Cardinals, improving their overall record to 8-1 on the season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Jack McCarthy drove in a pair of runs in the bottom of the first to push the Saints ahead 2-0 in the early going. The RBI single scored Quincy Via and Bobby Leitzel, who were moved to second and third with a sacrifice bunt off the bat of Ryan Cuadros.
- Catholic evened up the scoreboard in the top of the second, but the Saints answered with another run in the bottom from via an RBI single from Via, scoring Jordan Dickson who doubled the at-bat prior.
- McCarthy pushed across his third RBI of the day in the bottom of the third to extend the Saints lead to 4-2.
- Via walked with one away in the bottom of the fourth inning, subsequently stealing second and third before Leitzel drove him in with a sacrifice fly.
- Catholic scored a pair in the top of the fifth to cut the Marymount lead to just one.
- Liam Progulske and Michael Arce combined for 4.0 shut out innings out of the pen to close the door, with Arce earning his first save of the season, striking out two.
- Ryan Mariani earned the win on the mound, throwing 5.0 innings with three strikeouts.
- Via, McCarthy, and Dickson each knocked a pair of hits.
- Leitzel, Cuadros, and Jonathan McMath each added a hit in the win.
UP NEXT
- The Saints will travel to #6 Johns Hopkins on Tuesday, with first pitch slated for 3 PM.
- They will be back at Capital One Park Wednesday evening, facing Bridgewater at 4 PM.
