Softball Falls Short in Doubleheader Against New York University

Arlington, VA- Marymount finishes spring series with two hard fought losses against the Violets. Game one ended in a tight 3-4 loss and game two ended in a 5-11 sweep.

After games thirteen and fourteen, the Saints hold a record of 3-11.

GAME ONE: 3-4
  • Game one began with an early three run concession from the Saints. Marymount ended the top of the first with a fly out at first base, a fly out in center field, and a fly out in right field. The Saints' first at bat started with an out popped up to the pitcher, but was immediately followed by two singles hit by Kammie Brown and Kaylynn Johnson. Before Brown and Johnson could make it home, the last two outs were claimed by the Violets. This ended the first inning with a score of 0-3.
  • The Saints kept the Violets from scoring in the second inning, only allowing two runners on base before the outs were claimed with a runner caught stealing, a putout at first, and a fly out to left field. The second at bat for the Saints resulted in three hits. The hits were singles from Ashleigh Mannion, Samantha Papp, and Jenna Jew. No runs were scored by the runners on base.
  • The top of the third was a quick three up three down for the Saints in the field with no hits for New York. First at bat for Marymount was Brown who singled to left field. Johnson followed that up by placing her bat on the ball, making it to first on a fielder's choice that put out Brown. The last two batters got out by striking out swinging and popping the ball up to short stop.
  • The fourth inning remained at 0-3 with both teams gaining quick outs and no runs scored.
  • New York gained an additional run in the top of the fifth, increasing their lead on the Saints. The Saints responded with four hits during their at bat. The Saints started batting with a bunt laid by Leila Hernandez. This was followed by a single to center field from Brown to advance Hernandez into scoring position. Brown stole second, putting two in scoring position for Johnson's at bat. Johnson hit a double to left field to bat Hernandez home. Brown was thrown out at home while Johnson advanced to third. Hailey Leamer advanced to first on a throwing error that gave Johnson the opportunity for a run at home, scoring the second run for the Saints. The fifth ended with a score of 2-4 as the Saints narrowed the Violets' lead.
  • The Saints secured a quick three up three down in the top of the sixth. The outs were claimed by a pop-up to short stop, a strike out at the plate, and a pop-up to second base. Marymount started with two outs from pop-ups during their at bat. Jew was first to make it on base after a walk from the pitcher. Hernandez advanced Jew to second with a single. Brown followed Hernandez with another single to bring Jew home and advance Hernandez to second. The third putout came from a line drive to left field that ended the inning for the Saints.
  • Neither the Saints nor the Violets scored in the Seventh, resulting in a loss for the Saints with a score of 3-4.
  • Notable moments by the Saints: Leila Hernandez, Kaylynn Johnson, and Jenna Jew each scored one run for Marymount. Kammie Brown led at bat for the Saints with four hits during her four at bats. Ashleigh Mannion claimed the leading number of putouts for the Saints, with four outs in center field. Bailey Demusz was the primary pitcher of the game, pitching six innings and earning two strikeouts.
GAME TWO: 5-11
  • The second game started much like the first game with the Violets claiming an early three run lead during their first at bat. The outs by the Saints were gained by a grounded out, a pop-up to second, and a strike out at the plate. Marymount responded immediately to the Violets with Hernandez laying down a bunt to single as the lead off batter. Jew followed Hernandez with a single that placed Hernandez into scoring position. Brown singled batting in Hernandez and advancing Jew. Johnson claimed a spot on first in a fielder's choice that put out Brown but advanced Jew to third. Leamer grounded out but created an opportunity for Jew to score and Johnson to advance to third. The final batter struck out, leaving Johnson on base. This ended the first inning with a score of 2-3.
  • The second, third, and fourth innings resulted in no additional runs or hits for either team. The Saints earned their second inning outs from two fly balls out to right and left fields and a throw out at home. The third inning outs were earned for the Saints by a ground out to second base, a fly out to left field, and a ground out to short stop. Fourth inning outs were earned by a ground out to third and a double play from a pop-up and throw out at third.
  • New York gained two more runs in the fifth inning to increase their lead. The outs in the field were secured by a strikeout at the plate, a fielders choice play at second, and a fly out to left field. Samantha Papp held her swing to earn a place on base but the Saints were not able to bring her home with all hit attempts resulting in outs. The inning ended with a score of 2-5
  • The sixth inning saw an additional four runs scored for New York. The outs in the field were secured by a ground out to second, a fielder's choice at second, and an out at third on an attempted steal. The at bat for Marymount started with Brown on first from a walk. Johnson followed up with a double that would send Brown home to score. Leamer singled to left field advancing Johnson to third. Haley Greer walked sending Leamer to second. Harley Maire made contact flying out in right field creating the opportunity for Johnson to score at home and advancing Leamer to third. The inning ended with a ground out and strike out, leaving Leamer on third. The score at the end of the inning was 4-9.
  • The Violets scored an additional two runs in the seventh inning. Outs in the field were claimed at a ground out at second, a lined out at short stop, and a second ground out at second. Marymount ended the game with one additional run scored. Hernandez singled to center field, earning a spot on base. Brown doubled to left field advancing Hernandez to third. Johnson grounded out but created a scoring opportunity that brought Hernandez in to score. The game ended with a score of 5-11.
  • Notable moments by the Saints: Leila Hernandez led the Saints in runs scored, making it home two times for Marymount. Leila Hernandez and Kammie Brown claimed the most hits for the Saints during their at bats with two hits each. Kaylynn Johnson had two RBIs contributing to the runs scored for the Saints. Samantha Papp defended the Saints in the field with eight putouts. Kaylee Atkins was the primary pitcher of the game, pitching six innings and claiming two strikeouts.
UP NEXT
  • The Saints are on the road Thursday March 20th for a doubleheader against Penn State Abington. The games will take place in Montgomery County, Pa. with start times of 2pm and 4pm.
  • The Saints will return home on Saturday March 29th for a doubleheader against Immaculata. The games will have start times of 1pm and 3pm and be played at Barcroft Park.
