Men's Lacrosse Wins First Game of Season in Overtime

GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Marymount men's lacrosse opened up their 2025 season with an exciting, overtime win over the Quakers of Guilford Saturday afternoon.

Mason Vandawater's goal in the third overtime was the difference maker, sending the Saints to 1-0 on the young season.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After the Quakers got on the board first, the Saints answered with a pair from Kai Goo and Gavin Taylorson to claim their first lead of the afternoon.
  • Guilford scored five unanswered goals to take a 6-2 lead in the second period.
  • Vandawater notched his first goal of the game to get the Saints back in motion.
  • After another Guilford goal, the Saints sank three in a row to cut the deficit down to just one heading into the second half.
  • Bryan Maguire found Taylorson with an open look to even up the contest in the opening minutes of the third period.
  • After the Quakers retook the lead, Santino Rossitto evened it up yet again with his second goal of the day.
  • Down by two with under five minutes left in the match up, the Saints started piecing it together again. Taylorson found Vandawater to cut the Quakers' lead in half, followed by Maguire giving Ian Fructuoso an open look for his first goal of the day to tie it up yet again.
  • Guilford took the lead with just over a minute left to go, but Maguire showcased his veteran presence, notching an unassisted goal with just 25 seconds left on the clock to send the game into overtime.
  • After two scoreless overtime periods, Vandawater came through, netting his third and final goal of the day on what would ultimately be the deciding factor to send the Saints into the win column.
  • Vandawater had a team-high three goals alongside a pair of caused turnovers.
  • Maguire notched five points with his two goals and three assists, adding a ground ball and a caused turnover.
  • Cameron Glass and Winston Horshaw II each went 11-13 in face offs, with Horshaw II having seven ground balls, Glass with five.
  • Fructuoso had a goal and an assist with four total ground balls.
  • Kevin Gorham caused a pair of turnovers, adding a ground ball.
  • Jacob Brooks earned the win in the goal with eight saves and a trio of ground balls.
UP NEXT
  • The Saints will be back on the road Wednesday, Feb. 26, traveling to Shenandoah for a 7 PM match up.
  • Their home opener will be Saturday, Mar. 1 against Greensboro at 12 PM.
