Baseball Opens Season in the Win Column

TYSONS, Va. -- Marymount baseball opened the season in a big way, navigating the rain to take down the Shoremen of Washington College at Capital One Park.

With the 15-6 win, the Saints move into a quick 1-0 record on the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Quincy Via started the season off in a big way, taking it over the left field wall in the first at-bat for Marymount to take a quick 1-0 lead.
  • After Washington evened up the tally in the top of the second, Andrew Schaeb answered with an RBI single in the bottom of the fourth, scoring Jack McCarthy who singled earlier in the frame.
  • After Bobby Leitzel scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the fifth to extend the Marymount lead, Schaeb punched a single up the middle to score two more, pushing the Saints lead to four runs.
  • Jonathan McMath knocked a two-run single in the bottom of the sixth to keep the train moving, followed by an RBI single off the bat of McCarthy.
  • The Shoremen put themselves within three runs, but the Saints powered a seven-run bottom of the eighth to grab a comfortable lead.
  • McCarthy powered a two-run home run to right to get the offense moving in the frame, followed by a bases-clearing double from Jordan Dickson. Leitzel and Seth Sadler each had RBI knocks in the inning to add onto the lead.
  • Schaeb finished out the game on the mound to complete the win.
  • McCarthy, in his first start for the Saints, went 3-5 with his home run, collecting three RBI.
  • Schaeb went 3-4 with three RBI, also racking up a pair of strike outs on the mound.
  • Dickson knocked two doubles en route to going 3-5 at the plate, driving in three runs.
  • McMath and Leitzel each had two hits.
  • Jay Wandell earned the win on the mound in his first career outing for the Saints, allowing just one earned run in 3.2 innings of work, striking out two.
UP NEXT
  • The Saints will be back in action tomorrow at Capital One Park, taking on Stevenson in double header fashion starting at 2 PM.
