ARLINGTON, Va. — Marymount men's soccer capped off Senior Day in style with a 3-0 victory over Gwynedd Mercy on Saturday afternoon at Long Bridge Park. Before kickoff, the Saints honored their seniors for their contributions to the program: Bayron Banegas, Daniel Yi, Dylan Hirmas, Merlin Torres, and Drew Franco.
NOTABLE
- Bayron Banegas earned his 16th career shutout, setting a new Marymount program record for most career shutouts.
- Jefferson Lopez Coreas, Merlin Torres, and Christian Martinez Ortiz each found the back of the net in the victory.
- Torres also added an assist to cap off a strong performance.
- The Saints fired off 43 total shots (14 on goal) while holding Gwynedd Mercy scoreless.
- Lopez Coreas and Mynor Gonzalez led the offensive push with seven shots apiece, including three on target.
- With the win, Marymount improves to 2-0-1 in Atlantic East Conference play.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Marymount wasted no time taking control, with Merlin Torres opening the scoring in the 3rd minute after capitalizing on an early opportunity in the box. Jefferson Lopez Coreas doubled the lead midway through the first half, sending the Saints into the break ahead 2-0.
In the second half, Christian Martinez Ortiz added the final touch in the 68th minute, burying a shot from Merlin Torres to make it 3-0. From there, the Saints dictated tempo and kept Gwynedd Mercy pinned in their defensive half.
The Saints dominated both sides of the pitch to remain unbeaten in conference play, while goalkeeper Bayron Banegas made history, breaking the Marymount program record with his 16th career shutout.
