IMMACULATA, Pa. -- In a thrilling final minutes of the game, Marymount men's basketball picked up an Atlantic East Conference opening win over the Mighty Macs of Immaculata, 67-63.
Highlighted by double-digit efforts from
Miles Phillips and
Isaac Harris, the Saints improve to 7-5 overall on the year, now 1-0 in the AEC.
NOTABLE
- Harris led the way for MU, dropping 21 points with nine rebounds, just missing out on a double-double. He added three assists and steals, as well as a pair of blocks.
- Phillips had 19 in the win, going 5-of-8 from beyond the arc, while dishing out three assists and nabbing a pair of steals.
- Joshua Hughes notched eight points on the day with a rebound and an assist.
- Marcus Stubbs and Reuben McEachern each added six for the Saints.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Marymount started the game off with a bang. Harris found Hughes with a wide-open look, with Hughes slamming it down to get the offense rolling.
- Back-to-back-to-back scores from Phillips gave the Saints a seven-point lead with just over 10 minutes left in the first half.
- A seven-point run from the Mighty Macs put the contest within two, with Marymount still holding the advantage.
- Up by three with just over three minutes left in the half, Harris sank a three to double the lead.
- Scores from Phillips and Harris finished off the offense for the Saints in the first half, looking to hold onto their lead in second half action.
- Immaculata handled the Marymount blows to open the second half of play, with a three putting them within one.
- The Mighty Macs took the lead with 12:01 left to go, pushing the Saints to find answers.
- With under four minutes left to play, the Saints were staring at a five-point deficit.
- A layup from McEachern, free throw from Phillips, and a driving layup from Stubbs evened up the score and gave the Saints' side momentum.
- Phillips landed the big punch, sinking a three to give the Saints the lead again. After Hughes was fouled on the floor, initiating the double bonus, he sank both free throws to give Marymount a five-point lead with a minute left of action.
- The Saints held on down the stretch, picking up the big AEC win.
UP NEXT
- Marymount begins a three-game road stretch next Wednesday, first taking on Salisbury at 7 PM.
- They will be back at home Saturday, Jan. 18, taking on Marywood in AEC play at 4 PM.
