FREDERICKSBURG, Va. - Marymount baseball took the quick trip down I-95 on Monday afternoon to take on the Eagles of Mary Washington in a rescheduled affair, taking them down in a tight matchup by a final score of 8-6.
The Saints push their record to 21-5 on the season, still remaining 8-1 in conference play.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Eagles got on the board quickly with a run in the bottom of the first, but the Saints answered quickly with two of their own to take the lead in the next frame. Kevin Knoess led off the inning with a single, followed by Alec Reilly reaching via the hit by pitch. Chad Singleton punched a single to keep the momentum going, loading the bases with nobody out. After a strikeout and Knoess being gunned down at the plate in a tight play, the Saints had two runners in scoring position with two outs. Quincy Via came through, staying hot at the plate with a sharp single to plate their two runs in the frame.
- After three scoreless innings as both starters settled in, the Saints put up a big inning in the top of the sixth. Jordan Dickson and Via each reached, with Dickson being scored by Bobby Leitzel via a double. Ryan Cuadros followed Leitzel with a double of his own, plating two more runs. Knoess rounded out the scoring with an RBI single to score Cuadros from third and give Marymount a 6-1 lead.
- The Eagles pushed across a run in the bottom of the seventh to chip into the lead.
- Knoess knocked another RBI single to score Via in the top of the eighth to get the run back.
- Mary Washington tacked on four runs in the bottom of the eighth to gain momentum.
- Via hit a sacrifice fly in the top of the ninth to give the Saints a two-run cushion heading into the bottom of the ninth.
- Owen Mead struck out two of the three batters he faced in the ninth to secure the win and pick up his third save of the season.
- Ryan Mariani earned the win on the mound, going 7.2 innings with four strikeouts. He now holds a 2-1 record on the season.
- Knoess went a perfect 5-for-5 at the plate with two runs driven in.
- Via went 2-for-3 at the plate with three RBI.
- Leitzel went 3-5 at the dish with a double, driving in a run.
- Cuadros had two RBI on his double.
- Singleton collected an RBI in the win.
UP NEXT
- Marymount will start off their three-game series with the Griffins of Gwynedd Mercy this Friday, first traveling to their place for a single game at 3 PM.
- They will come back to Capital One Park this Saturday to round out the series in doubleheader fashion with first pitch set for noon.
