Softball Splits with Cabrini

ARLINGTON -- After a two-week hiatus due to a multitude of weather postponements, Marymount softball picked up a conference split with Cabrini on Saturday to move to 4-2 in conference play.

NOTABLE
  • Shanyn Burch did it all in game one, pitching a complete game shutout while only allowing one hit. She also drove in the game's only run.
  • Burch retired the final 17 batters she faced, including 15 straight groundouts to end the game. The Saints finished with no errors as a team in game one.
  • Jaclyn Burch finished the day 5-for-7 at the plate, including three doubles. The senior also had three RBIs.
  • Kaylynn Johnson went 3-for-4 with two RBIs in game two.
GAME ONE (1-0 W)
  • The Saints left two runners in scoring position in the bottom of the second after a strikeout to close the inning.
  • After putting two more runners in scoring position thanks to a wild pitch in the bottom of the third, Burch came through with a clutch sacrifice fly to bring in the only scoring needed.
  • With the bases loaded and one out in the fourth inning, an infield fly rule play resulted in a double play ending a chance to extend Marymount's lead. Despite the ball being dropped, the initial out still counted and then Cabrini tagged out the runner in a rundown at the plate to end the frame.
  • The final 17 Cabrini batters were retired as MU held on for the 1-0 win.
GAME TWO (9-6 L)
  • Cabrini jumped ahead 3-0 in the top of the third.
  • Marymount got two runs back in the bottom of the inning with RBIs from J. Burch and Johnson.
  • Things looked good for the Saints after adding four more runs in the fourth inning to take a 6-3 lead.
  • But timely hits and some blunders by Marymount allowed Cabrini to plate six runs in the fifth inning to jump back ahead, 9-6.
  • Marymount left four runners on base in the final three innings and fell, 9-6.
UP NEXT
  • Marymount enters a long stretch away from home over the next few weeks.
  • The Saints will travel to play Gwynedd Mercy on Tuesday at 3 / 5 PM.
  • Marymount is next scheduled to play at Barcroft Park on Thursday, April 18 against the University of Mary Washington beginning at 3 PM.
