Softball Recovers for Split at Messiah

MECHANICSBURG, PA -- After losing the first game, 6-2, Marymount softball recovered by handling Messiah 14-6 after five innings to finish out the doubleheader on Friday afternoon.

GAME ONE
  • Marymount hit the scoreboard first after Ashleigh Mannion scored after Bailey Demusz reached first off a fielder's choice. 
  • Also in the top of the second, Jaclyn Burch had a successful bunt, allowing her to reach first and Samantha Cinotti to score, for the second run of the day for the Saints.
  • The Falcons added 5 runs in the bottom of the second to lead, 5-2.
  • The Saints were unable to add more runs in this game but the Falcons added 1 in the 5th inning, putting the final score at 6-2. 
GAME TWO
  • A lot of action occurred in the top of the 1st inning for the Saints. This included a total of nine runs and eight hits with two left on base.
  • Notable plays included Kaylynn Johnson singling down the left field line, advancing to second on the throw and allowing Kammie Brown to score. Following this play, Kaylee Atkins singled to right center, bringing Leila Hernandez home.
  • With bases loaded, Jenna Jew singled up the middle, allowing Johnson to score for their third run of the inning.
  • Cinotti singled to right center, bringing in Atkins for the forth run.
  • The Falcons responded by switching pitchers but this didn't stop the Saints. They scored five more runs with singles from J. Burch and Johnson as well as Brown and Hernandez being hit by pitches to bring in the runners on third base.
  • After a successful first inning, Marymount added 3 more runs in the second frame with a single to right center from J. Burch and a triple to left center from Hernandez. Following the second inning, the score stood at 12-4.
  • The top of the fourth brought even more success as the Saints rallied two more runs from Falcon errors. 
  • The Falcons also added two more runs in the fourth inning. The game ended after five innings with a victory for the Saints, 14-6. 
  • Angelica Gurevich pitched a total of 4.0 innings, putting up two shut outs and only six earned runs after facing 21 batters. 
UP NEXT
  • The Saints travel to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina to face Saint Elizabeth University and Misericordia University on Tuesday and King's College and Penn. State Harrisburg on Wednesday.
  • Next Friday, they will travel to Fayetteville, North Carolina to play Methodist University in a double header.
  • They will finish out that weekend in Raleigh, North Carolina to play Meredith College and Eastern Mennonite University on Saturday and Brevard College and Christopher Newport University on Sunday.
