Softball Picks Up Two Impressive Wins over Sweet Briar

WASHINGTON – Marymount softball picked up its first two wins of the season on a chilly Friday evening at Nationals Youth Academy, taking down Sweet Briar 8-0 and 12-4.  

GAME ONE
  • In the circle, Bailey Demusz picked up her first career shutout in game one. She threw five innings and struck out a career-high nine batters while only allowing two hits.
  • The Saints broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the third after Kammie Brown scored on an error by Sweet Briar.
  • Marymount really opened things up with three straight singles to start the fourth inning before all three runners went on to score on wild pitches.
  • Later in the frame, Kaylee Atkins drove in two runs with a strong single to left field.
  • The Saints also added two runs on fielder's choice plays as the runners beat the tag at the plate to round out the seven-run inning.
  • Demusz closed out the Vixens with a 1-2-3 final frame to clinch the 8-0 shutout.
GAME TWO
  • Marymount's bats truly came alive in the nightcap as the Saints knocked a total of seven extra-base hits.
  • Sweet Briar jumped ahead with two home runs in the top of the third inning.
  • Atkins (2-for-3) tied the game with a double to right center in the bottom of the frame.
  • Later in the third, Jaclyn Burch closed out a two-out rally with a three-run double to give MU a 6-2 lead.
  • In the fourth, Atkins clubbed a three-run shot over the left-field fence to push Marymount ahead 10-2.
  • Two batters later, Ashleigh Mannion earned the home run chain with an opposite-field dinger.
  • After Sweet Briar scored twice in the top of the fifth to bring Marymount back to the plate in the bottom of the frame, Kaylynn Johnson (3-for-4) hit a single to center field to end the game with a 12-4 final score.
  • Shanyn Burch got the win in the circle after throwing three innings and only allowing two runs.
UP NEXT
  • Marymount will have the rest of the weekend off before hitting the road to face Washington College on Tuesday, Feb. 27 beginning at 2 PM.
  • The Saints will return home on Saturday, March 23 to take on Neumann at 12 PM.
