ARLINGTON -- Marymount women's soccer relied on a pair of first-year forwards to provide all the necessary offense in a 2-1 wn over Neumann in the Atlantic East semfinals on Wednesday night. With the win, the Saints advance to their second-straight conference championship.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- In a very evenly-matched game, the Saints finally broke through right before halftime with a tally from Nicole Alvarado. The first-year beat defenders in the box before firing with her left foot to the far post past the goalkeeper for the 1-0 lead in the 42nd minute.
- Early in the second half, Neumann drew a penalty kick after a hard foul in the box. First-year Mara DuFour read the attempt perfectly and swatted the ball away for a save to keep Neumann off the board.
- A few minutes later, the Knights did draw even off a well-designed corner kick set piece to the far post.
- Less than a minute after Neumann tied the game, first-year Marissa Tonic scored the game-winning goal off a great pass ahead from Leila Lajdel. It was Tonic's second goal of the season.
- Marymount held off Neumann down the stretch to ice the 2-1 victory in regulation.
UP NEXT
- Marymount will make another trip to Scranton, Pa., to take on No. 1 seed Marywood in a rematch of last season's Atlantic East women's soccer championship. The Saints prevailed in that matchup, 1-0.
- Earlier this season, MU fought the Pacers to a scoreless tie on the road.
- Dating back to last season, the Saints are 2-0-1 in the last three matchups and have held Marywood without a goal in all three contests.
