Men's Basketball Protects Pablo Coto Trophy With Win Over Amherst

ARLINGTON, Va. -- With a big second-half showing, Marymount men's basketball won the Pablo Coto Tournament in exciting fashion, taking down the Mammoths of Amherst in the championship round.

With the win, the Saints improve to 5-1 on the season ahead of a crosstown match up this upcoming Tuesday.

NOTABLE
  • Marcus Stubbs won Most Outstanding Player for his showing across the two-day tourney, dropping 13 points with 4 of 6 shooting from beyond the arc. He added six rebounds, three blocks, and two steals and assists.
  • Miles Phillips grabbed All-Tournament Team, putting up strong performances in both games. In the championship, he had 10 points with two assists and a steal.
  • Isaac Harris had 11 on the day with four rebounds and an assist.
  • David King grabbed a team-high seven boards alongside eight points and three assists.
  • Reuben McEachern posted six points with three assists and four boards.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The match up got out to a slow start, with the Saints having trouble getting on the board. Down 9-2, King nabbed a steal and drove down the lane to get back onto the board.
  • The Saints began to shift momentum with a run, with Muhsin Muhammad putting MU within five with just under 10 minutes left in the half.
  • Phillips tied up the contest at 20 apiece with a minute left in the first half, but a free throw from the Mammoths gave them a one-point lead when the halftime buzzer sounded.
  • Marymount held close at the start of the second half, waiting for the big blow to take the lead. Stubbs, getting the pass from King, sank a three to put the Saints within one. Less than a minute after, he sank another to give MU the lead.
  • MU never looked back after the momentum shifted, holding onto their lead down the stretch to take the championship game.
UP NEXT
  • Marymount will be back in front of the home crowd this upcoming Tuesday, hosting Catholic for a Pope's Cup match up at 6 PM.
