ARLINGTON, Va. -- Behind stout defensive play and a well-rounded offensive effort, Marymount women's basketball won on the first day of the Pablo Coto Tournament over Baruch, 70-56.
Highlighted by a standout performance from
Jaylah Thompson, the Saints move to 2-4 on the season and will play in the championship tomorrow evening against Gettysburg College.
NOTABLE
- Thompson drained 15 off of the bench for the Saints, shooting 6-of-10 from the floor, alongside an assist and a steal.
- Catie Kolwey narrowly missed a double-double for MU, grabbing 10 boards with eight points and two assists.
- Kaylah Barr and Ella Morrison each had nine in the strong win.
- Cara Vollmer posted 10 points for Marymount, adding three rebounds and two assists.
- Ava Achtyl had 10 boards on the night with six points.
- Samantha Bulik led the Saints with six assists.
- Kelly Ceroll had eight rebounds and two assists.
- Grace Damato sank key shots, notching four points with five rebounds and three assists.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Saints came out of the gates hot, going on an 14-to-4 run to open the contest with Ella Morrison sinking a pair of threes to get the Saints moving.
- The first period was all Marymount, as they would outscore the Bearcats 24-8 to take a commanding lead. Thompson nabbed a steal and sank a layup in the final seconds to push MU into the second period with strong momentum.
- Baruch put 20 on the board in the second quarter, but the Saints held tight with them throughout to carry the lead into the half.
- Vollmer sank another three at the 6:17 mark in the third quarter to put the Saints up by 14.
- Back-to-back scores from Kolwey and Damato put the Saints ahead by 20 heading into the final quarter of action.
- Baruch tried to inch their way back into the game, but Marymount kept the momentum on both sides of the court to take the first game of the long, basketball-filled weekend.
