ARLINGTON – It got tight at the end, but Marymount women's basketball held off a feisty Immaculata squad in the conference opener on Wednesday night, 66-61.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Marymount led by as many as eight points in the first quarter but ended the frame with a slim 18-16 advantage.
- In the final four minutes of the first half, MU finally appeared to gain some breathing room as the Saints closed the period with a couple baskets from Ava Achtyl (10 points) to hold a 34-26 lead at halftime.
- The third quarter was a similar story as the Saints used a 9-0 run to close the frame with a 47-35 lead on a bucket from Claire Smith with 34 seconds left.
- Marymount appeared to be on cruise control in the final period ater a pair of free throws from Terra Dzambo gave the Saints a 61-47 lead with 3:53 to go.
- A slew of Marymount turnovers and fouls propelled Immaculata, who went 10-of-10 from the free-throw line in the fourth quarter, all the way back to within two points with 1:01 to play.
- Symantha Shackelford (11 points) scored a jumper and made 3-of-4 from the charity stripe in the final minute to ice the dramatic victory.
- Chandler Eddleton led all scorers with 22 points on 8-of-12 from the field. She also added 13 rebounds and made all six free-throw attempts.
- Although Marymount never gave up the lead, there were six ties throughout the contest.
- MU held a 44-28 advantage for points in the paint after only making one shot from beyond the arc.
