ARLINGTON, Va. - Marymount men's basketball moved to 4-0 in conference play on Wednesday night, taking down the Griffins of Gwynedd Mercy by a final score of 81-77.
The Saints move to 10-6 on the year with the win ahead of another test this coming weekend.Â
NOTABLE
- Montell Cooper led the scoring for the Saints, notching 24 total points on 9-of-15 shooting from the floor. He added four rebounds, two assists, and a steal to his credit.Â
- CJ Highsmith Jr. put up a double-double in the win, putting up 12 points while grabbing 11 boards.
- Off of the bench, Marcus Beckett added a spark to the Saints, putting up 14 points on 3-5 shooting from beyond the arc. He added four assists and rebounds.Â
- Reuben McEachern continued to play well for the Saints, sinking 14 points with three steals and four rebounds and assists apiece.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The pair of teams traded shots in the early, but back-to-back threes from Beckett and Miles Phillips gave the Saints a 19-to-13 lead early in the first half.
- With the game knotted up at 26 with under six minutes left to play, the Saints edged out the Griffins slightly down the stretch of the first half to take a 39-35 lead into the locker room.
- Marymount jumped early in the second half, starting it off with a good layup from Marcus Stubbs, followed by a three-point play from Cooper to push the lead to nine.Â
- A three from Cooper and a layup from Beckett put the Saints at 11 ahead with just over ten minutes left in the game.Â
- MU held onto their lead through the final minutes of the game, with Highsmith Jr. sinking two key free throws to finish off the win.Â
UP NEXT
- Marymount heads to Cabrini this Saturday, Jan. 20, for a 2 PM tip off.Â
- They follow that up with another key matchup with Neumann next Wednesday, Jan. 24, at home.
- Tip off is scheduled for 8 PM.
