ARLINGTON, Va. - Marymount men's basketball played host to Christopher Newport University in midweek non-conference matchup Wednesday evening, dropping a tough affair with the Captains 87-71.
With the loss, the Saints drop to 8-6 overall on the season ahead of a travel weekend for a key AEC game.Â
NOTABLE
- Wyatt Hockenberry led the Saints on the offensive end, dropping 18 points with four rebounds and a pair of assists.
- Montell Cooper had 16 for Marymount, adding seven total assists and two steals.Â
- Marcus Stubbs had 12 on the night with six rebounds.
- CJ Highsmith Jr. had six total rebounds for the Saints, adding a block and a steal.
- Marcus Beckett put up eight points on 2-of-4 shooting from beyond the arc. He notched three steals to add to his line.Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Marymount started off the game with a quick 7-0 run, capped off by a layup in the paint from Jack Bifano to get force a CNU timeout.
- Out of the break, the Captiains answered with a three of their own before Stubbs put the scoring back on the Marymount side to kick off the back-and-forth first half.
- Tied at 20-20 with under 10 minutes to go, the Saints continued to hold CNU down well. A short spurt from the visitors in the final minutes of the half sent the game into intermission with CNU up by four.Â
- CNU held the advantage on the offensive end in the second half, jumping out to a 73-50 lead with under nine minutes to go.Â
- Marymount continued to play hard, getting within 12 off of a three from Beckett, but the Captains ultimately held on down the stretch.Â

- Marymount hits the road this weekend, heading to Centenary for an Atlantic East matchup with the Cyclones.
- Tip off is set for 3 PM.
- The Saints will be back at home next Wednesday, Jan. 17, to host Gwynedd Mercy at 8 PM.
