Men's Soccer Closes West Coast Trip with 2-0 Loss at Occidental

LOS ANGELES – Marymount men's soccer fell 2-0 to Occidental on Sunday afternoon to close out its season-opening West Coast road trip.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Occidental jumped ahead in the fourth minute after placing a header past the defense on a free kick.
  • On the ensuing possession, Reece Ventura fired a shot that missed just a few feet wide right.
  • Late in the first half, Francisco Rodriguez had two shot attempts but neither found the back of the net.
  • MU came out with purpose to start the second half. Manny Gaunaurd perfectly placed a shot between one defender's legs that was inches away from crossing the end line before being kicked away by the final defender.
  • Brian Cruz, who came on in relief for Bayron Banegas, made two solid saves in a three-minute stretch to keep the match within reach.
  • After some late subs, Oxy got past the defense and put an insurance goal in the back of the net in the 82nd minute.
  • Both sides put five shots on goal in an evenly-contested match. Oxy had a slight 13-10 edge in shots taken and both sides took two corner kicks.
HEAR FROM COACH KALIN
  • "We gave away an early goal which stung us. However, I was happy with how we responded and created several very good chances, including a great clearance off the line by their defender. For the second game in a row, we were an inch away from a different game. While the results on the trip weren't what we hoped, it's positive that we played very level with two very good programs."
UP NEXT
  • Marymount will open up its home slate against Hampden-Sydney on Wednesday at 7 PM.
  • The Saints will hit the road again next weekend with a trip to the Hampton Roads to face Christopher Newport (Saturday) and Virginia Wesleyan (Sunday).
