ARLINGTON, Va. – Marymount softball played two completely different types of games on Thursday afternoon against Gwynedd Mercy but picked up two wins nonetheless, winning by mercy rule in game one before needing a three-run final frame to survive in game two.
NOTABLE
- Shanyn Burch and Bailey Demusz both pitched complete games to earn victories in the circle.
- Marymount scored 11 runs in the first inning of game one.
- Samantha Cinotti and Nicole Gilroy both went 3-for-3 in game one, while Sheila Kiernan went 2-for-2 in game two.
- Leila Hernandez and Cinotti both hit triples on the day, while Kiernan and Burch both hit doubles. Burch also hit the lone home run of the day for the Saints.
- Marymount improves to 8-4 in Atlantic East play, currently placing the Saints in a tie for second with Marywood in the regular-season standings.
GAME ONE
- Marymount batted around while scoring 11 runs in the first inning.
- Cinotti and Burch both hit RBI extra-base hits to start the scoring.
- Gilroy hit two RBI singles in the first inning.
- Kiernan closed the scoring in the first with a two-run double.
- Marymount added four more runs in the bottom of the third.
- Burch hit a two-run home run to make it 13-0 and then Gilroy and Kiernan both scored unearned runs to close out the scoring for Marymount with a 15-0 win.
GAME TWO
- Jaclyn Burch drilled a single to left field that brought home Kiernan for a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second.
- Gwynedd Mercy finally got on the board on a pair of RBI singles and some help from an error to make it 3-1 in the bottom of the fourth.
- Marymount couldn't find a run again until their last chance at the dish.
- With two outs, Gilroy drilled a single to right field to bring home Hernandez to make it 3-2.
- Heads-up baserunning from Cinotti advanced her to third on the play.
- Down to her last strike, Kiernan came up clutch by also going the opposite way for a single. Cinotti scored the tying run and then Gilroy came all the way around to score the winning run after the right fielder misplayed the first hop.
UP NEXT
- The Saints will close out the regular season on the road Sunday against Catholic.
- The Atlantic East Tournament will begin with round-robin pool play on Friday, May 5 and Saturday, May 6.
