WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Marymount baseball team clutched out two wins on Sunday afternoon, taking down the Pride of Widener University.
The Saints won game two in walk-off fasion to move to 6-2 on the young season.Â
Notable
- Ryan Cuadros had a day for the Saints, going 3-3 in game one with two home runs and six RBI. He added a stolen bag to give the Saints the offensive surge they needed to take the affair in decisive fashion.
- Bobby Leitzel, Bryce Smith, and Max Nathan each added an RBI in the game, with Smith and Nathan collecting two hits apiece.Â
- Cam Clarkson was the hero in game two, knocking the walk-off RBI single to complete the sweep.Â
- David Muirhead put together another stellar start for the Saints in game two. Throwing a complete game and earning the win with five strikeouts, he allowed just one earned run, putting his ERA at 0.42 in 21.1 innings pitched.Â
- Blake Doggett went 2-for-3 with a double in game two.Â
- The Saints put up 16 hits between both games.Â
How It Happened
- Marymount came out firing in game one, scoring four in both the first and second innings to gain an early sizable advantage. With two men on in the bottom of the first, Cuadros knocked a three-run shot over the right field fence to push the Saints ahead early.
- Cuadros followed up his first inning heroics with a second inning three-run shot over the left field fence to keep the Saints moving.Â
- With the Pride on the Saints heels, Quincy Via and Leitzel knock back-to-back RBI singles to put the Saints up 10-to-5.
- With the bases loaded in the top of the seventh, Widener looked to mount the ultimate comeback, but Jordan Dickson shut the door with a strikeout to end the game and give the Saints their first win of the day.Â
- Game two was a pitchers' duel, with Muirhead going toe-to-toe with the Widener starter, a solo homer in the top of the second gave the Pride an early 1-0 lead.Â
- The Saints broke through in the bottom of the fifth, putting pressure on the Widener defense and scoring Jimmy Baker to even up the tally.Â
- Clutch pitching from Muirhead gave the Saints a chance in the final frame to walk off the game.Â
- With the bases loaded, Head Coach Mike Cassidy went to his bench, bringing Clarkson to the plate. Working the count even, Clarkson found the pitch he was looking for, getting the knock past the diving first baseman to send Marymount into victorious celebration.Â
