Softball Opens Weekend at Grand Slam Classic

RALEIGH, N.C. – Marymount softball dropped a pair of hard-fought contests to Rhode Island College and William Peace to open the Grand Slam Classic on Saturday afternoon.  

NOTABLE
  • Kaylynn Johnson smoked a grand slam in the first inning against Rhode Island.
  • Shanyn Burch also hit a home run against Rhode Island.
  • Against William Peace, Sara Emig hit a home run to left-center in the first inning. She went 3-for-3 in the contest to lead the MU offense.
RHODE ISLAND (L, 3-5)
  • Johnson hit a grand slam in the first inning to make it a 4-0 MU lead early.  
  • In the third inning, Johnson scored on a sacrifice squeeze from Elizabeth Corcoran to make it a 5-1 lead.
  • Emig scored on a throwing error from Rhode Island in the fourth inning to extend the lead to 6-1.
  • Burch's homer in the 6th made it a 7-3 lead for the Saints.
  • Rhode Island scored four runs in the sixth to tie it before winning the game 8-7 on a walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh.
WILLIAM PEACE (L, 3-5)
  • Against the Pacers, Emig's home run in the first gave the Saints an early 1-0 lead.
  • That lead held until Caitlyn Oakland hit a pinch-hit sacrifice fly in the fourth inning to make it 2-0.
  • William Peace tied it in the fifth with a two-run home run to center.
  • Emig scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the fifth to give Marymount its final lead of the day.
  • Back-to-back RBI singles from William Peace in the top of the sixth inning put the Pacers ahead, 5-3.
  • Marymount couldn't rally in the final two innings and fell, 5-3. 
UP NEXT
  • Marymount will play North Carolina Wesleyan (10 AM) and Randolph-Macon (12 PM) on Sunday to conclude the Grand Slam Classic.
