Baseball Earns First Conference Win of Season

FAIRFAX, Va. - The Marymount Saints baseball squad picked up their first Atlantic East victory of the season over Gwynedd-Mercy to start the three game set with the Griffins. 

Behind hot bats and strong pitching performances, the Saints move to 10-8 overall on the season, 1-0 in the early conference trek. 

Notable
  • Starter David Muirhead got back to form, tossing 7.0 innings with seven strikeouts to pick up his fourth win of the season. He allowed no earned runs in the start, dropping his ERA to 2.68 on the season. 
  • Bobby Leitzel was 4-of-5 at the plate from the leadoff spot, knocking in an RBI with two runs scored himself. He is currently batting .354 on the season.
  • Joseph Kramp cranked his third home run in the Saints last two games.
  • Ryan Maylie was dialed in at the plate, going 2-for-4 with two doubles and two RBI.
  • Peter Chiarello tossed 2.0 innings of shutout ball to close out the game.
How It Happened
  • After the Griffins plated a run in the top of the first, the Saints answered with three of their own to take the lead in the bottom half of the inning. Letizel led off the inning with a double, making his way into scoring position via a Jimmy Baker walk. Blake Doggett knocked an RBI single to score the speedy leadoff hitter from second with ease.
  • Later in the bottom of the first, Maylie knocked a double into the left-center gap to plate both Doggett and Baker. 
  • MU put another on the board in the bottom of the second via a sacrifice fly from Baker, scoring Kramp who singled to begin the frame. 
  • Leitzel put the Saints fifth run on the board in the bottom of the fourth inning, scoring on a passed ball. 
  • Kramp knocked his big blast in the bottom frame of the fifth inning, scoring Maylie who doubled earlier in the frame. 
  • Muirhead didn't allow another run after the first inning, cruising to the 7.0 innings of strong pitching on the mound. 
  • The Saints tacked on one more in the bottom of the seventh with an RBI single from Leitzel, scoring Ryan Cuadros.
  • Chiarello worked out of a jam in the eighth, then cruised through the ninth, striking out two to close out the win. 
Up Next
  • The Saints will travel to Pa. tomorrow to finish out the series with Gwynedd-Mercy, playing a doubleheader with first pitch slated for noon. 
  • Marymount will continue conference play next weekend, taking on Centenary in a three-game set at home.
  • The doubleheader of the affair will be on Friday, with first pitch set for 1 PM, then the third game played on Saturday at 10 AM.
  • The series will be the first set played at The Ballpark at Capital One Center for the Saints.
