Softball Opens Conference Play with Sweep of Cabrini

RADNOR, Pa.– Marymount softball came to play on Tuesday afternoon, picking up an impressive road sweep over preseason Atlantic East favorite Cabrini.  

NOTABLE
  • In game one, Kaylee Atkins had two home runs and four RBIs.
  • Kaylynn Johnson had two home runs and three RBIs in the second game.
  • Shanyn Burch pitched a complete game in game one to pick up her fourth win of the season.
  • Bailey Demusz has six strikeouts and allowed only two runs in the second game to pick up her first win of the season.
GAME ONE
  • After Cabrini opened the scoring with an RBI single in the first, Sheila Kiernan hit an RBI single in the top of the second to tie the game at 1-1.
  • Burch hit a sacrifice fly in the third to give Marymount a 2-1 lead.
  • Cabrini scratched across two runs in the bottom of the frame to jump ahead, 3-2.
  • Atkins hit her first homer of the day in the top of the fourth to tie things up, 3-3.
  • Cabrini added another run in the fourth but Marymount capitalized on two errors to score three runs in the top of the fifth and take a 6-4 lead.
  • The Saints added three insurance runs in the top of the seventh on a Johnson sacrifice fly and Atkins' second homer of the day to take a 9-4 lead into the bottom of the frame.
  • Cabrini scored two unearned runs in the bottom of the seventh but the Saints held on for a 9-6 win. 
GAME TWO
  • Johnson smoked a two-run home run to center in the top of the first to push Marymount to a 2-0 lead early.
  • Back-to-back RBI hits from Demusz and Kammie Brown in the top of the second gave MU a 4-0 lead.
  • Hailey Leamer laced an RBI single to center field in the top of the fourth to make it 5-0.
  • Johnson put an exclamation point on the day with her second homer of the game in the top of the fifth to push the lead to 6-0.
  • Cabrini finally got on the board with two runs in the bottom of the fifth and one in the bottom of the seventh, but the Saints forced a game-ending groundout to win, 6-3.
UP NEXT
  • Marymount returns to Barcroft Park for a doubleheader against Hood on Wednesday, March 22 at 12 PM.
  • Atlantic East play continues on Saturday against Marywood. First pitch of the doubleheader is set for 1 PM at Barcroft Park.
