Softball Drops Two to Messiah

ARLINGTON, Va. – Marymount softball was competitive in both games of the doubleheader against Messiah on Thursday afternoon but couldn't quite generate enough offense to steal a win, dropping a pair of contests to the Falcons, 5-3 and 4-1.

NOTABLE
  • Kammie Brown had three hits on the day, including a double in game one.
  • Shanyn Burch blasted two home runs on the day with one coming in each game.
  • Bailey Demusz retired the first nine batters of game one and settled in to throw five solid innings on the bump.
GAME ONE
  • After Demusz's strong start to the game on the bump, Marymount broke through and scored the first runs of the day in the bottom of the third.
  • Three straight singles from Samantha Cinotti, Sara Emig, and Johnson gave the Saints a 2-0 lead.
  • Messiah finally found some offense the second time around the order and put together three runs in the top of the fourth.
  • A strong throw from Emig to home plate was the second out of the frame to save another run from scoring.
  • Messiah went up 5-2 on a two-run homer in the top of the fifth.
  • With two outs in the bottom of the seventh, Burch hit a solo shot to left center to bring the Saints within two, but a flyout ended the game on the next play.
GAME TWO
  • Burch led off the bottom of the first inning with another home run to left center to give Marymount an early 1-0 lead.
  • Messiah evened things up with an RBI double in the top of the second before taking the lead in the third on an RBI single.
  • The Falcons added another run in the top of the fifth after a mishandled throw at third on a steal attempt went into the outfield allowing Messiah to take a 3-1 lead.
  • Messiah added insurance in the top of the seventh on a solo home run to center field.
  • The Saints got two runners on in the bottom of the seventh but they were stranded as Messiah got the final two outs to end the threat. 
UP NEXT
  • Marymount will open Atlantic East play on Saturday at Cabrini. First pitch is scheduled for 12 PM.
  • The Saints will return to Barcroft Park for a doubleheader against Hood on Wednesday, March 22 at 12 PM.
