Softball Splits with Bridgewater

ARLINGTON, Va. – Marymount softball pulled off an impressive 9-8 comeback victory to open the day against Bridgewater before settling for a split in the second game of the day on Wednesday afternoon.

NOTABLE
  • Kaylynn Johnson combined to go 5-for-8 at the plate with seven RBIs.
  • Kaylee Atkins went 4-for-4 at the dish in game one and picked up her first career win on the bump with two shutout innings in relief.
  • Samantha Cinotti and Sara Emig both recorded two-hit games on the afternoon.
GAME ONE
  • In the first inning, Marymount knocked three straight two-out singles from Johnson, Atkins, and Sheila Kiernan to plate the first two runs of the day.
  • After Bridgewater took a 3-2 lead in the top of the second, Marymount took a 4-3 lead with RBI singles from Kammie Brown and Caitlyn Oakland.
  • The Eagles evened the game with an unearned run in the fourth before Johnson hit a line-drive home run to center field to make it 7-4.
  • The back-and-forth game continued as Bridgewater hit a three-run dinger of their own in the top of the fifth to tie the game once again.
  • The Eagles scored the go-ahead run in the top of the sixth after the Saints threw the ball away trying to catch a runner advancing to third on a wild pitch.
  • In the bottom of the sixth, two heads-up baserunning plays from Johnson allowed her to score what proved to be the game-winning run.
  • On a single to left, her third hit of the day, she advanced to second after noticing no one covering the base.
  • Two plays later, after staring down the pitcher on a 1-3 putout, Johnson scooted home and scored on a nifty slide to beat the catcher and give Marymount a 9-8 lead.
  • Atkins closed out the seventh inning with two straight outs after Bridgewater pushed a runner to second base.
GAME TWO
  • Both teams picked up two-RBI singles in the first inning, giving the appearance that the second game would be a similar back-and-forth contest.
  • That proved to not be the case as Bridgewater found gaps in Marymount's defense all game long to the tune of 16 hits and 10 runs.
  • Johnson hit another RBI single in the seventh inning to cut the deficit to 10-3 but that was the final run of the game.
UP NEXT
  • Marymount is right back in action against Messiah on Thursday, March 16.
  • First pitch at Barcroft Park is set for 12 PM.
