Baseball Takes Two from Stevenson in Home Opener

WASHINGTON – Marymount baseball picked up its first two wins of the season on Saturday afternoon against Stevenson by scores of 7-4 and 3-0.

NOTABLE
  • David Muirhead threw a gem in game two as he took a perfect game into the sixth inning. He picked up the win after throwing 6.2 innings and only allowing one hit.
  • Blake Doggett smoked a game-tying three-run shot in game one that turned the momentum in Marymount's favor after falling behind 3-0 to start the game.
  • Dylan Heil picked up the win in relief in game one after throwing six strikeouts over 4.2 innings. He didn't surrender any earned runs and only allowed one walk.
GAME ONE
  • Stevenson scored the first three runs of the game to hold an early lead.
  • Doggett's three-run homer over the right-field wall tied the game at 3-3 in the bottom of the third.
  • After Stevenson took the lead back in the fourth, Ryan Maylie hit a go-ahead two-run single to center field to give the Saints a 5-4 lead.
  • Marymount gained some insurance on a bases-loaded walk from Bobby Leitzel and a sacrifice fly from Ryo Fabre to win 7-4.
GAME TWO
  • The Saints and Mustangs found themselves in a pitcher's duel to close out the doubleheader.
  • Marymount left two runners in scoring position in the first two innings to remain scoreless.
  • Stevenson finally recorded its first baserunner of the game in the top of the sixth after a lead-off single. Muirhead promptly picked off the runner at first base to eliminate the scoring threat.
  • In the bottom of the frame, Marymount strung together four straight hits and scored three runs, including a double from Bryce Smith down the right field line that brought in MU's first run.
  • Stevenson had its best scoring opportunity in the top of the seventh inning. After hitting back-to-back batters to load the bases, Muirhead was pulled for Owen Mead.
  • Mead forced a foul out to get out of the jam with the 3-0 lead intact.
  • Jordan Dickson recorded the final out of the game to pick up the save.
UP NEXT
  • Marymount will be back at Nationals Youth Academy for a doubleheader against Averett on Saturday, Feb. 25.
  • Game one will begin at 12:00 PM.
